Pickens County Vision 2025 gets $5,000 grant

PICKENS — Pickens County Vision 2025 Coalition’s receipt of a $5,000 grant award was announced at a joint press conference held by Gerald Sweitzer, past chairman of Pickens County Vision 2025, Michael Sheriff, current chairman of Pickens County Vision 2025, and Pickens City Administrator Katherine Brackett on Wednesday, November 17, at Pickens City Hall.

The Appalachian Gateway Communities Initiative Grant will fund a two-day workshop and facilitate the development of a comprehensive natural and cultural heritage tourism strategy for Pickens.

National funders of the grant include The Appalachian Regional Commission, The National Endowment for the Arts, The Conservation Fund and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Pickens County Vision 2025’s was the only grant proposal accepted in the state of South Carolina. The grant is for $5,000 with a matching amount from the community.

The goal of the Natural and Cultural Tourism Grant workshop is to create a plan that capitalizes on Pickens’ vast natural resources, cultural assets and historic richness to increase tourism.

“The development of cultural tourism in Pickens is going to equal economic development,” said Sweitzer.

The geographical locations on which workshop participants will focus are the city of Pickens and north to Highway 11. The grant calls for workshop members to include the role of arts and natural resources in developing a tourism strategy for Pickens.

Sassafras Mountain, which has the highest elevation point in the state, is a currently untapped resource with potential as a major tourism attraction for Pickens. These are the types of natural resources workshop members will identify for utilization of a tourism plan, in addition to identifying ways in which art and cultural heritage can be used to revitalize downtown Pickens.

The workshop, which should take place sometime during the first quarter of 2011, is another major accomplishment under the larger umbrella of the Pickens County Vision 2025 Plan. Sheriff reviewed the progress and other accomplishments that have taken place in the first three years of the Vision 2025 inception.

The Pickens County Vision 2025 Plan is comprised of 89 objectives that have been grouped into five goal areas: A Planned Community, A Working Community, A Healthy Community, A Sense of Place and An Educated Community. Highlighted here are just a few of the many accomplishments made thus far:

Vision 2025 partnered with the United Way Community Impact Task Forces on education development and financial stability. Members of Vision 2025 served on both task forces. Funded by the United Way, plans were implemented.

• Promoted bike — pedestrian plan and funding for Easley. The Sense of Place subcommittee played an active role in helping the city with obtaining grant funding and having new bikeways marked on city streets, which are currently in use.

• Assisted the city of Pickens with development of a local vision process to establish their identity. The city is currently implementing a plan to bring new business and tourism to the downtown area.

• Convened Pickens, Anderson and Oconee county leaders to consider an increase in equine events and facilities for the three counties. The equine industry represents a $63 million economic impact in the three counties. Nearly 100 people gathered at the Anderson Civic Center to engage Clemson and the Garrison Arena in a tri-county equine venture, and a non-profit organization was created with a board of directors membership representing each county. Several more current and past members of Vision 2025 are serving on the board of the new S.C. Upstate Equine Council.

• Joined with Tri-County Technical College to work toward creating a tri-county business incubator. After touring several small business incubators, members arranged a webinar with a leading small business incubator to learn the best practice for proceeding with funding and development. Tri-County is currently seeking funding for a feasibility study on behalf of Vision 2025.

Among all the accomplishments made by Pickens County Vision 2025 in the last three years, the Sense of Place subcommittee, headed by Easley Chamber of Commerce President Kent Dykes and Erin Nuntz, has made the greatest progress in facilitating groups and organizations in the county to adopt some of the 20 objectives within the subcommittee’s goal area.

“The role of the Pickens County Vision implementation team is to facilitate local governments, organizations, individuals and the business community to adopt and implement the individual objectives,” Sheriff said. “We don’t care who gets the credit. Any group can work on the objectives for the benefit of the county, and we will publicize their accomplishment.”

Also weighing in on the progress of Pickens County Vision 2025 Implementation Team was Sweitzer.

“One of the most interesting developments for the Vision 2025 team has been joining with both Anderson and Oconee counties on two objectives common in the Vision Plan for all three counties,” he said. “We brought together key people in both Anderson and Oconee that were interested in joint development of the equestrian potential in our counties and the creation of a small business incubator.”

Both of these initiatives are currently being implemented.

Members of the workshop planning committee include Sweitzer, Brackett, Wayne Kelley, Chairman of the Pickens Cultural Commission and Ellen Kochansky, Executive Director of The Rensing Center. Other participating organizations of note include Table Rock State Park, Appalachian Council of Government, Pickens Historic Society, Birchwood Center for Arts & Folklife, Pickens County Museum of Art & History and the Pickens Chamber of Commerce.

Sheriff issues warning after scam reports

COUNTY — Local authorities have received recent reports involving telephone scams on merchants in the Upstate, including some in Pickens County, and Sheriff C. David Stone is urging residents to be aware.

In the scams, which utilize the AT&T call relay system for the deaf and speech-impaired, the ccammers place a large order for food to be picked up at a future date, purchase with a stolen credit card and add a thousand or so dollars for a “pickup agent” who will pickup and deliver the food on the predetermined date.

The merchant is asked to wire the extra money by Western Union to the agent as soon as possible. The entire transaction is bogus, and the merchant would certainly lose if they forwarded the money.

“The upcoming holidays unfortunately bring out the worst in some people,” Stone said. “It’s not uncommon for law enforcement to see an increase in scams, shoplifting, robberies and break-ins during this time of year. We encourage everyone to be alert and aware of their surroundings while out and about shopping and enjoying all of the holiday events.

“The old sayings that nothing in life is free and if it’s too good to be true then its probably not true, are good advice for all of us,” he said. “There are as many ways for scammers to try to get your money as there are people. Always be aware and contact a family member or law enforcement if uncertain before letting go of your hard-earned money.”

Faith Lutheran presents check to Gleaning House

For the second time, Faith Lutheran Chapel has been able to share $1,500 with the Gleaning House as it provides groceries for people of the community. Though a small congregation, Faith has again hosted a yard sale at its Main Street location (formerly known as the Ice Cream Parlor).  With 38 of its members working and a great many community residents shopping, the goal of $1,000 was reached and through the fraternal gift program of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, the church was able to receive an additional $500. Linda Swanberg, Care in Community Director (above left) and Christian Kannenberg, the Financial Associate for Thrivent, (center) presented the check to Esther Corn, who coordinates the Gleaning House activities. The Gleaning House provides groceries each Tuesday and Thursday to more than 400 families in Pickens County..

Senior center gets grant

The Senior Citizens of Pickens officially received a $48,997 grant from the Lt. Governor’s Office on Aging in a special ceremony held at the Hagood Senior Center in Pickens on Tuesday. The grant, along with a mandatory match, will go toward providing new windows and vinyl siding on the facility. Pictured above, Tony Kester of the Office on Aging presents the check to board members and local dignitaries involved in making the center a reality.

Let there be light

The annual Blue Ridge Electric Co-op tree lighting was held Tuesday evening despite rain in the area. The event was moved inside due to the weather. Tri-County Technical College president Dr. Ronnie Booth, pictured above left with Blue Ridge CEO Charles Dalton, was given the honor of lighting the tree this year.

Easley NJROTC travels to Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Easley High School Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) completed its annual trip to the nation’s capital on November 20 after three days of hands-on learning.

Following an 11-hour bus ride, the cadets’ first stop on the educational field trip was the United States Marine Corps Museum in Quantico, Va. Upon arrival in Annapolis, Md., the cadets checked on to yard patrol craft (YP-676 & YP-677) which would be their sleeping arrangements for the next three nights. Each craft can accommodate, in tight quarters, 30 people and is very cost effective.

Thursday started with a tour of the Capitol building, followed by pictures and questions with South Carolina senior senator Lindsey Graham. A stop in the Smithsonian Institute’s Museum of American History to see the Star Spangled Banner that was flown at Fort McHenry on September 13-14 of 1814 when the British tried to invade Baltimore was next on the agenda. Visits to the Holocaust Museum, World War II Memorial, Korean Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, and the Vietnam Memorial all came next to complete the Washington, D.C. portion of the field trip.

Stopping the British invasion at Baltimore played a vital role in maintaining the freedom of the United States of America. Visiting Fort McHenry is a priority stop on the trip and brings to life the Naval Science 2 curriculum of Maritime History taught in the NJROTC program. The visitors’ center at Fort McHenry displays a film depicting Dr. Beanes and the events that led up to the writing of the Star Spangled Banner. Easley’s NJROTC cadets helped the Park Rangers change out the after-hours 50-star 13-stripe flag to the daily 15-star 15-stripe flag, a replica of the flag flown in 1814.

Easley’s’ NJROTC Color Guard assisted with the opening ceremonies at the United States Naval Academy ice hockey game against Drexel Friday night and received many compliments from both staff and fans. Most cadets have never seen an ice hockey game and were so excited that they were the leading cheerleaders of the game, keeping the bleachers rocking! Navy lost in overtime, 4-3.

The trip was made possible by chaperones Melissa Little, Natasha Page and Laura Welsh. Support from YP Operations & the Blue Jacket Café also make this trip happen. The folks at the Fort McHenry National Monument also helped this trip be a success with the in-depth description of the battle and the hands on flag handling.

“Thank you all,” said Easley High NJROTC instructor Chief Mark Stauder.

The cadets that accumulated enough support points and chose to participate in the field trip were Richard Baehser, David Berryhill, Christopher Bishop, Jeffery Budesheim, Jacob Churray, Tyler Cummings, Hunter Dodd, Destinee Gilbert, Nathaniel Godfrey, Denton Griffin, Saudra Haire, Conner Hillegas, Andrew Jonakin, Ericka Jordan, Catlyn Lavigne, Ashley Little, Lauren Machen, Breana Manley, Austin Martin, Micharl Mayfield, Joshua McFadden, Dylan Norris, Jonathan Presley, Guner Raby, Shania Ramey, Rodney Rampey, Brittney Scurry, Steven Smith, Emily Thompson, Erica Thompson, Whitney Tripp, Thomas Trotter, Brett Vileikis, Brittney Vileikis, Candace Ward, Leland Welsh, Kaitlyn Williams, Jack R. Young.

Pickens girl found safe after abduction

PICKENS — An 8-year-old Pickens child is safe following an ordeal in which she was taken from her mother and transported out of state.

Donnie Lee Shelton, 46, of 124 Sunset Drive in Pickens, has been arrested and charged in the incident.

According to the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to a home on Ravenwood Lane in Pickens about a domestic disturbance at the residence. Deputies believe that on Monday at around 6 p.m., a man came to the home and kicked in the door. The victim told officers it was her ex-husband and that she had been separated from him for a year and a half. She also told deputies that she had an order of protection on her ex-husband and provided documents to deputies.

Deputies say the victim then said the man entered the home that she and her two children shared and grabbed the couple’s 8-year-old daughter and left.

Warrants were issued for Shelton, and he was charged with violation of custody order, assault and battery first degree, criminal domestic violence, trespassing and burglary.

An Amber alert was issued by the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED). The alert was canceled after officers with the Corbin City (Ken.) Police called local authorities and said that Shelton had been arrested at a local hospital. Officers say that Shelton had taken the girl to the emergency room of the hospital after the child had complained of stomach pain. The child is now back with her mother, authorities say.

Shelton is currently being held in Kentucky. No date for extradition has been set, according to the PCSO.

Domestic disturbance leads to deputy-involved shooting

PICKENS — An Easley man was shot by Pickens County sheriff’s deputies last Wednesday after deputies say he pointed a handgun at them.

In a release from the PCSO, deputies said they responded to a domestic call at 1574 Reece Mill Road in Pickens at about 7 p.m. on November 17.

Once on the scene, deputies encountered a man outside the residence of his estranged wife armed with a handgun.

Officers say that during the next hour and a half, deputies tried to negotiate with the subject to put the gun down and go with them and family to the hospital for help.

According to the release, the man repeatedly told officers that he was “going to end it all” and they would have to kill him.

As the man became more agitated, deputies attempted to use a less lethal tactic of discharging a beanbag round in an effort to subdue the subject. After the beanbag round stunned the man, he fled and pointed his handgun at the officers, who fired in response.

After the man fell to the ground with gunshot wounds, deputies began to administer first aid until EMS arrived. The man was airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Follow medical treatment, Jeffrey Wayne Petit, 36, of 109 Meredith Court in Easley, was charged with three counts of pointing and presenting a firearm at a person.

Following normal procedure, SLED was notified and is conducting an investigation.
