Great home improvement projects

(StatePoint) For many Americans the warmer weather of spring means it’s time to focus on all those home improvement projects that would be inconvenient during winter.
Adding an extension, sanding wooden floors or replacing a roof are a lot easier when you’re not worried about the weather and diminished day light. Also, contractors are less likely to have weather-related delays that blow timelines, making spring renovations run more smoothly.

Spring — Garden time!

Few things are anticipated more in spring than the arrival of new leaves on the trees and budding flowers in the garden. A landscape awash with fresh colors can brighten the spirit and make anyone want to head outdoors.
There are many different plants that begin to show their colors in the spring. A number of perennials, annuals and trees begin to flower or show new sprouts come the springtime. Here are some plants that can be planted for springtime enjoyment.

Bring back homemade biscuits

There’s nothing quite like a hot flaky biscuit right out of the oven.
The four recipes featured this week should please the pickiest eater.
Now, I’m not claiming that they’re fat-free, because they’re not. Nor am I even claiming they’re low in fat, because when it comes to good biscuits I don’t care about any of that. I care about how they taste.
None of these recipes are for people who are looking for diet food. If it calls for butter, use real butter. If it calls for cheese, use real cheese. After eating any of these, you may feel slightly guilty, but you will not be hungry.
Go for the gusto, and happy baking.

Region Band honors

Region One high school band auditions were hosted by Greer High School in January. Band students from all seven Spartanburg school districts, both Laurens school districts, Greenville school district, Pickens school district, and Oconee school district performed audition criteria for a panel of judges. After the tabulation of the scores of more than 1,500 students competing, the top scores were chosen, and those students were awarded placement into this year’s Region Band. These students attended the 2011 Region One Band Clinic in February at Furman University. During the clinic they were under the direction of fine clinicians, studied music with students from all over the region, and performed a concert attended by approximately 2,000 people. These Pickens High School band students won placement in the Region Band: Jennifer Bramel, Anna Chastain, Madison Vaughn, Cydney Reid, Liz Whitaker, Kaylee Sandor, AJ Keene, Antwan Sloan, Alex Powers, Josh Seawright, Austin Tinsley, Renee Chastain, Tyler McManis, John McManus, Austin King, Danielle Buckhiester, Paul Dennis, Joseph Stockton, and Camden O’Bryant.
