Free bluegrass concert Saturday at Tri-County

PENDLETON — Tri-County Technical College’s sixth annual Bluegrass under the Stars concert is Saturday, April 2, at the school’s Pendleton campus.

COUNTY — After a long winter, spring has finally arrived.
With the warmer weather comes more vacations, time camping, hiking or at the lake, as well as other outdoor activities that leave our homes unoccupied. Unfortunately, what also comes along with this fun time of year are residential break-ins and thefts.

This quote from a 1989 brochure is as fitting today as it was then. The 27th annual Pickens Azalea Festival will provide as much fun, entertainment and history as ever when it returns this year on Friday and Saturday, April 15-16.

Whitehurst given SCSCD Community Service Award

CLEMSON — On Saturday, March 19, Marion Ard Whitehurst of Central received the 2011 Community Service Award from the Colonel John Robins Chapter of the South Carolina Society Colonial Dames XVII Century at a luncheon at the Madren Center.

Lawrence Chapel to host Native American service

CENTRAL — Lawrence Chapel United Methodist Church will host a Native American Worship service at the 8:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services on April 10.

Lady Lions open region slate

The Daniel Lions opened their region season with a 6-3 win over Belton-Honea Path last Tuesday night, then followed the victory up with a Carley Hoover no-hitter in an 8-0 win at Walhalla the following night. However, the Lions’ hot streak came to a crashing halt with a disappointing 1-0 loss at the hands of the West-Oak Warriors Friday night. Daniel, 4-1 overall and 2-1 in Western AAA play, paid a visit to region rival Pickens Tuesday night, with results unavailable at press time.

Whitmire takes gold for BPWC

HOPKINS — The Berkshire-Pickens Wrestling Club opened the USAW season in a big way last week, traveling to Lower Richland High School and garnishing six medals.

Liberty’s Garrett Whitmire claimed the first gold of the club’s season when he won the Cadet 119-lb. Division in the Greco-Roman competition. Whitmire also took a silver in the Freestyle competition.
Teammate Nathan Gilstrap, also of Liberty, grabbed a silver in the Junior 145-lb. weight class in Greco-Roman and a bronze in the Freestyle competition.

Barrett leads LHS past Carolina High

LIBERTY — Junior Dakota Barrett had a big night for the Liberty Red Devils baseball squad at Carolina High last Tuesday night.

LIBERTY — First-year Liberty High head football coach Kyle Stewart’s supporting staff was officially announced at a recent player and parent meeting.

Charles F. Rogers scholarship golf tourney date set

PICKENS — The seventh annual Charles F. Rogers Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament is scheduled for May 21 at the Pickens Country Club.

Proceeds from the event will go to benefit a male and female Pickens High School basketball player planning to attend a university, college or technical school.
