Easley Little League celebrates 30 years

EASLEY — Easley Little League celebrated its 30th anniversary Saturday with an opening day celebration kicking off the 2011 season at the J.B. “Red” Owens Complex.

Thousands of games have been played since April 1981, when the Easley Recreation Departmetn switched over to Little League Baseball. Gregg Powell, current president of the Easley Little League, gives credit to Randy Bray and John Tutt for bringing Little League to Easley in 1981.

4 snow days waived for county students

COUNTY — Pickens County students will not be required to make up all six days they missed this year because of inclement weather.

Scout Troop 51 leaders recognized

EASLEY — Three adult leaders for Scout Troop 51 received awards at the recent Pickens District Awards Banquet in Easley.

Pickens finalizes budget

PICKENS — The city of Pickens officially has a finalized budget for the coming year.
After a unanimous vote with all council members present, the city adopted a 2011-2012 general fund and a utility fund budget during Monday night’s regular monthly meeting at city hall.

Artist in residence teaches students about printmaking

PICKENS — Pickens High School has a new artist in residence.
Jim Creal, a printmaker from Spartanburg, is an artist in residence who will teach PHS visual art students how to print the two-color plate monoprint process.

Fowler named Post 11 Legionnaire of the Year


Curtis Fowler, left, was honored as Pickens American Legion Post 11’s Legionnaire of the Year last Tuesday night. Fowler, who received his award from Post Commander Gary Parsons, right, was honored in part because of his dedication to visiting local veterans in rest homes around the Upstate area, Parsons said.

Easley softball picks up two Region I-AAAA wins

EASLEY — Easley had two come-from-behind wins last week on the softball field, beating Westside and Woodmont, while also losing to Wren.

Easley had won just once in first seven games before posting the wins to improve to 3-8 overall and 2-6 in Region 1-AAAA. Easley played host to Pickens last night and will travel to West-Oak Thursday. West-Oak plays at Easley Monday.

BPWC hosts USAW event

NORRIS — For the third time in four years, Berkshire-Pickens Wrestling Club will host a South Carolina USAW sanctioned tournament.

Liberty baseball schedules Military Appreciation Night

LIBERTY — The Liberty Red Devil baseball team will host its first annual Military Appreciation game this Friday night at 6 p.m. when the Carolina Trojans visit LHS.

LHS prepares to retire diamonds

LIBERTY — Liberty High School will retire its current baseball and softball fields when the last regular season games are played in the stadiums later this month.
