Pickens’ ‘Turtles on the Town’ becoming reality
PICKENS — The city of Pickens’ “Turtles on the Town” project is entering the next phase.
Intricate artistry by sculptor Zan Wells has the turtles off to the foundry, where the 12 clay models of the turtle species will be used to make the molds for the final bronze statues. This involved process will take about three months for completion.
PCSO needs help finding Easley equipment thieves
EASLEY — Authorities are asking for the public’s help in finding those responsible for the theft of a Bobcat skid steer and the trailer it was sitting on from a parking lot in Easley.
FIRST Robotics team teaches their robot to play basketball
COUNTY — It’s not every day that you get to be part of a team that designs, builds and teaches a robot to play basketball, but that is exactly what the members of Pickens County FIRST Robotics Team 2751 are doing.

Mayor Larry William
Abernathy
Clemson — The Honorable Mayor Larry William Abernathy, 64, of 1026 Keystone Lane died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Born in Shelby, N.C., he was a son of the late Paul Hicks and Madge Aline Mitcham Abernathy. Mayor Abernathy served for a total of 32 years in city government for the City of Clemson having served for four years on council prior to being elected Mayor in 1984. During his tenure as mayor, both the City of Clemson and Clemson University have had significant growth and yet through his leadership, the city has maintained it’s village quality as well as forged cooperation with Clemson University to help enrich the lives of both citizens and students alike. He was a 1969 graduate of Clemson University where he also earned his Master’s Degree. He also served as Director of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission for both Oconee and Anderson Counties as well as being Visiting Professor of Counselor Education and Clinical/Mental Health in the College of Health Education and Human Development at Clemson University. He was a member of University Lutheran Church.
Surviving are his wife, Jo Ann Davis Abernathy of the home; daughter, Dana Simpson and husband, Tim of Clemson; son, Ben Abernathy and wife, Nicky of Atlanta, Ga.; and grandchildren, Blake Simpson, Tyler Simpson, Chase Abernathy and Cody Abernathy.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a brother, Danny Abernathy.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m., Thursday at First Baptist Church of Clemson.
The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

Tragic accident takes Liberty 7-year-old’s life
LIBERTY — Tragedy occurred in the Liberty community last Thursday, as 7-year-old Emma Elizabeth Boughman was struck by an SUV as she rode her scooter across Odell Street near the intersection with Willard Street.

School board votes to save EHS buildings
EASLEY — After an outpouring of support from community members to save a 1939 Easley High School building, the School District of Pickens County’s board of trustees voted unanimously last Tuesday night on a revised construction plan that will do just that and more.
5 arrested after meth lab found in Six Mile
SIX MILE — An attempt to serve a arrest warrant at a home in Six Mile on Friday led Pickens County sheriff’s deputies to uncover what they are calling an active clandestine meth lab.
On February 3, deputies with the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office were attempting to serve an arrest warrant on a subject located at 130 Amber Drive in Six Mile.
