Second reading of SDPC budget passes with no public input

COUNTY — Not a single person signed up to speak regarding the School District of Pickens County’s 2012-2013 General Fund Budget (GFB) during a public hearing at Monday night’s scheduled SDPC board meeting.

Sunday morning collision claims 2

EASLEY — Two people are dead following a head-on collision on S.C. 183 Sunday morning.
Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley said that Darrell Foster McCoy Sr., 52, and Nancy Marie Seal, 65, were both pronounced dead at the scene from blunt force trauma. Both victims were from Easley.

Graduation 2012

Wounded Warriors set to pass through Easley again

EASLEY — The city of Easley will again host participants in the Wounded Warrior Program’s annual trip to Keowee Key next week.
Members of the group, from Camp LeJeune, N.C., will be at the J.B. “Red” Owens Recreation Complex around 2 p.m., Monday, June 18, and will depart at 3 p.m.

Bike night in Pickens

Pickens hosted its second Cruise-In & Music on Main event last Saturday night, with motorcycles from around the area featured lining the street. In addition to the music and fun for families, a Poker Run was held to raise money for MARY’s House. At left, Jesse Holcombe of Holcombe Cycles presents Ann Durham of MARY’s House with a $400 check. The event continues this Saturday night with classic cars.

Liberty accepts contract for Pickens’ recycling

LIBERTY — The city of Liberty will soon begin collecting curbside recyclables in the city of Pickens.
After a 3-2 vote on Monday, with Mayor Michael Sheriff and Councilman Rick Clark not in attendance, council voted to accept an agreement with Pickens.

Weasel Creek String Band to play Saturday at Hagood Mill

PICKENS — Music in the Mountains 2012 will continue this Saturday with the Hagood Mill hosting a special “Sugar in the Gourd, Dancin’ on a Board” concert with the Weasel Creek String Band.

Obituaries for the week of June 12

Louise Yeargin
Norris — Mable Louise Smith Yeargin, 76, of 211 Dianne Drive, died Tuesday at Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.
Born in Six Mile, she was the widow of the late Jessie Willis Yeargin, Jr. and a daughter of the late Clifford and Ethel Towe Smith. She was a homemaker and a member of Camp Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Benny Yeargin of Anderson; two brothers, David Smith of Liberty and Roger Smith of Six Mile; and three grandchildren, Kristin, B.J. and Cliff Yeargin.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by three sisters, Dorothy Whitlock, Jean Porter and Sue Mann.
Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Yeargin were held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial was at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

Primary elections Tuesday

COUNTY — After weeks of controversy over candidate eligibility, the June primaries are nearly here, with South Carolina voters going to the polls next Tuesday, June 12.
Although many races were originally up for grabs in next week’s primaries, the number dwindled dramatically with last month’s state Supreme Court decision ruling nearly 200 candidates statewide ineligible for the election.
