School bus catches fire on first day
EASLEY — The first day of school was not without incident for a small group of students in Pickens County.
Wreck claims Easley teen
EASLEY — An Easley teenager is dead following an accident on S.C. 183 on Monday.
Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley said Kevin Daryl McNab, 16, of 129 Latham Street in Easley, was killed in a single car accident at around 11:40 p.m.
Kelly said that McNab lost control of his vehicle and was ejected, landing under the vehicle at the intersection of S.C. 183 and Jameson Road.
Flame, Wave square off for Meals on Wheels
The fifth annual Sam Wyche Meals on Wheels Food Fight Bowl was held last Friday night at Pickens High School. Although Easley won 40-7 on the field, Pickens took home the Ultimate Food Fight Trophy, raising more than $23,500 for Pickens County Meals on Wheels. EHS raised $9,111, putting the grand total raised at nearly $33,000. Above, the Pickens cheerleaders celebrate with the trophy at halftime of the game. Officers: Ex shoots at woman
EASLEY — Police are searching for an Easley man after they say he shot at his ex-girlfriend at a close enough range to put powder burns on her face.
Local kids get free backpacks, school supplies

EASLEY — The Dream Center continues to connect community organizations together in order to bring hope and healing to those children and families in Pickens County who are so desperately in need.
West End Elementary was the location last Saturday for a huge Back-to-School Backpack Party sponsored by Heather Owens, owner and director of Upstate Carolina Dance Center (UCDC), located on Highway 81 in the Powdersville area.
Volunteerism epitomized in August ‘Flame’ winner

EHS NJROTC completes basic leadership training
EASLEY — 68 Easley High Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) cadets recently completed one week of Basic Leadership Training (BLT) at the YMCA Camp Greenville located in the mountains of South Carolina.
Kopera earns TCTC staff excellence award
PENDLETON — Ken Kopera, physical plant director at Tri-County Technical College, has been honored with the highest award given for staff excellence at the college.
Kopera, a Powdersville resident, received the Presidential Medallion for Staff Excellence. The medallion, along with a cash award made possible by the Tri-County Technical College Foundation, goes to a person who best exemplifies the college philosophy and has contributed the most during the academic year to the development of the college and its students.

PICKENS — The 2012 edition of the Easley-Pickens rivalry football game will be remembered for some odd things.
One, the game was eerily similar to the 2011 game won by Easley, 54-20. Friday night, in front of a standing room crowd, the Green Wave again dominated in a 40-7 win.

Hope Marie Jenkins
Pickens — Hope Marie Jenkins, 46, of Pickens, died Tuesday Aug. 14, 2012 at her home.
Hope was born in Pickens County, daughter of Eula Mae Powell Grice, and the late Willie A. Grice. She was employed as a cook at The Village Inn Restaurant in Pickens and she was a Baptist.
Survivors include her mother Eula Mae Grice of Easley, sons Zachary Jenkins of Greenville, and Cody Jenkins of Simi Valley, Calif., sisters Brenda Grammas (Clarence), Juanita Revis (Junior), Patricia Porter (Dale), and Frankie Owens all of Liberty.
In addition to her father, Hope was preceded in death by a son Christopher Jenkins and sister Willie Mae “Betty” Owens.
Funeral services were conducted 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16 in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens. Burial followed at Red Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
