Volleyball team shows youth’s promise
Life As I Know It
By Nicole Daughhetee
When we learned that there was going to be a fall volleyball league at the Easley Recreation Center, my oldest daughter, Emerson, decided she wanted to sign up and play.
Prior to her playing volleyball, I’m not certain I would have characterized her as athletic per se. Truth be told, she chose volleyball for two reasons: (1) her love-her-like-a-sister best friend was playing and (2) she wanted to wear funky knee socks.
Punky Brewster-esque fashionista? Absolutely. Athlete extraordinaire? I had my doubts.
Getting in shape, losing weight
All About Ben
Bt Ben Robinson
A few weeks ago I was speaking with my friend Roddey Gettys, COO of Baptist Easley hospital. I asked Roddey if the hospital had any job openings. I think Roddey was a little concerned because I asked about the “chief of surgery” position.
It went something like this: Roddey asked what I knew about performing surgery, and I said “You reckon they will ask that in the job interview?.”
Roddey changed the subject, for some reason.
“Are you still wanting to lose weight?” he asked.
“Well, I was hoping to get back to where I could fit into pants that didn’t have a bunch of X’s in front of the size,” I admitted.
Sandy took the past, changes the future
On The Way
By Olivia Fowler
Prior to Hurricane Sandy, the small amount of information I thought I knew about New Jersey was gleaned from experiences in the Newark airport which were less than pleasant, a general rudimentary and mixed bag of trivial information from several televised sources, and the occasional news story.
The only member of my family who spent any time in Atlantic City was my Uncle Walter, who won a dance contest there sometime prior to WWII and kept the tuxedo he wore while tripping the light fantastic packed in mothballs in the attic of my grandmother’s house.
Blue Flame win Upperstate title

LEXINGTON — After battling through a tough Upperstate 3A playoff bracket to advance to the State championship game at White Knoll High School, the Pickens Lady Blue Flame fell agonizingly short of winning their first State crown since 2008 on Saturday, as North Myrtle Beach overcame a Pickens win in the match’s first set for a 3-1 victory and the program’s first-ever State title.
Sparks close out volleyball season as regular-season, tournament champs
PICKENS — The Pickens Middle School volleyball team capped off the season by winning its end of the year tournament recently under first year head coach Mellie Crumpton.
It was the first tournament victory for the Sparks (16-2) in four years. The Sparks had a first-round bye in the tournament due to winning the regular season title with a 12-1 record.
Hagood Mill to host Selugadu VI
Native American celebration set for
Saturday November 17
PICKENS — In observance of Native American Heritage Month, the Pickens County Cultural Commission invites the public to join the friends of the Pickens County Museum for a special, and free, day of milling, memories and a Native American Celebration at the Hagood Mill Historic Site & Folklife Center. The Mill will be operating, rain or shine, on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
“Selugadu” (Cherokee for cornbread) celebrates the area’s Native American influences. A number of groups will be represented, including individuals born and raised here, as well as those who have made South Carolina their home.
Hosted by “Reedy River Intertribal,” this sixth annual event will begin with a “Presentation of the Colors,” honoring America’s veterans, and will continue throughout the day with a great program of drumming, dancing, singing, storytelling, demonstrations and games. Reedy River’s “Sachem” (head-man), Pat Langley, will be present to interpret Native American culture, along with Dr. Will Goins, Chief Executive Officer of the Eastern Cherokee, Southern Iroquois and United Tribes of South Carolina.
Historic Old Pickens Foundation to host dedication ceremony
PICKENS — The board of directors of the Historic Old Pickens Foundation would like to invite everyone to a dedication ceremony to Honor Our Past.
Recently, an 1887 pump organ was donated and installed at the Old Pickens Presbyterian Church. The ceremony will take place at the church, located just off of S.C. 183 near the entrance to Duke Energy, this Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
Honored guests will include Carolyn Yonally from Greenville and her family, the generous donors of the organ. Those attending will learn the interesting history of the organ, how it was built, and hear the organ played by Jane Pridgen of Salem.
