Holy Trinity Episcopal hosting bazaar Saturday

CLEMSON — For more years than any can remember, the women of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Clemson, have sponsored an annual bazaar on the first Saturday of December to raise funds for community charities. Proceeds have been used to support groups like Clemson Community Care, Our Daily Bread of Seneca, The Salvation Army (Oconee and Pickens), and Helping Hands of Clemson.

This year, the annual event is incorporating a new twist, thanks to chairperson Kathy Crouse, long-time parish member and active supporter of its outreach efforts.

Rebranded as Holy Trinity Bazaar and Artisan Market, the event now includes the work of local artisans.

Baptist Easley’s Festival of Trees to start on Dec. 4

EASLEY — The Baptist Easley Hospital Foundation’s 19th annual Festival of Trees will be held Dec. 3-26.

Free and open to the public, this year’s Festival will feature 36 sponsored decorated trees, donated wreaths, and decorated gingerbread houses.

The festival is open 9 a.m.-8 p.m. daily in the hospital concourse and atrium.
The Festival of Trees opens with the annual Lovelight Tree Lighting on Monday, Dec. 4, at 5:30 p.m. Sponsored by the hospital auxiliary, proceeds from purchased lights on the Lovelight Tree go to fund the Lifeline program. A $5 donation in the name of a loved one buys a light on the tree. This year’s honorary tree lighter is Roddey E. Gettys, III, CEO of Baptist Easley, who has served the hospital for 43 years.

Gingerbread houses and decorated wreaths can be purchased by the highest bidder between Dec. 12-15.

All proceeds from the Festival of Trees will be used to purchase equipment for Baptist Easley Hospital.

Donations needed for Cannon’s annual Festival of Wreaths

PICKENS — Planning is under way for Cannon’s fifth annual Festival of Wreaths, and the hospital is looking for businesses, organizations or individuals to donate decorated wreaths for the event.

Wreaths were put on display beginning on Nov. 26 in the hospital’s main lobby area and will remain on display until Dec. 7, during which time individuals can come and view the wreaths.

On Dec. 7, the hospital will conclude its Festival of Wreaths with a “Winterfest” holiday bazaar and bake sale from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Local handmade items, along with the displayed wreaths, will be on sale at the bazaar. Items include handmade soaps, jewelry, glassware and more. All of the items are made by hospital volunteers and employees. The bazaar is open to the public.

Country Santa helps to make Christmas special

COUNTY — As folks prepare for massive sales and incredible deals during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the Country Santa Program hopes the true spirit of Christmas — the spirit of giving to those less fortunate — will bring in a bounty of donations for the thousands of families they will help this year.

Buddy Cox, Pickens’ very own Country Santa, and his elaborate network of elves has been delivering toys and Christmas miracles to families in Pickens, Northern Anderson and Oconee Counties since 1978.

Had it not been for Country Santa, approximately 1,300 families, which Cox says translates into roughly 3,300 kids, would not have had any presents to open last Christmas morning.

Police chase ends with deadly wreck

EASLEY — A Greenville man was killed following a high-speed pursuit last Friday near Rock Springs Baptist Church in Easley.

According to Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley, Gerald Edward Garraux, 52, of 1618 East Saluda Lake Road in Greenville, was killed when he lost control of the car he was driving and overturned.

Kelley said Garraux died from blunt force trauma after being ejected from the vehicle. He was not wearing a seat belt when the wreck occurred.
Officers from the Easley Police Department responded at approximately 1:15 p.m. to Powdersville Road and Mossie Smith Road to investigate an accident, according to a release from the department.

Miller steps down as Liberty police chief

LIBERTY — The city of Liberty’s police chief resigned this week.

According to a release from Liberty mayor Michael Sheriff, Leland “Corky” Miller resigned as chief of the Liberty Police Department on Monday.

Sheriff appointed detective Adam Gilstrap as acting head of the department and said there are no immediate plans to replace Miller.

Chihuahua case continues

EASLEY — It seems as though neither the Blanton nor the Watson families will have their day in court anytime soon in the battle over custody of a chihuahua that has made headlines.

Local magistrate judge Michael Baker granted a change of venue motion in the case, as he and other area magistrates knew too much about the case because of all the publicity it has drawn.

The case was moved to the magistrate’s office in Liberty, where a magistrate from outside Pickens County would be brought in to hear the case.

Parades, holiday festivities set around county

By Nicole Daughhetee

COUNTY — December is just around the corner, and local municipalities throughout Pickens County will usher in the Christmas season with family-friendly annual parades and events.

Easley will host its Grand Illumination and Downtown Merchants Open House Christmas celebration on Friday, Nov. 30. Horse-drawn carriage rides (starting at the park at Pendleton Street) and live entertainment festivities begin at 5:30 p.m., and the tree-lighting ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. in front of city hall.
The following Saturday, Dec. 1, the Easley Christmas Parade, themed “Home for the Holidays” begins at 10 a.m. and will trace a new parade route. With the closing of the Easley High School on Pendleton Street, a new parade route has been designed.
