Hagood Mill to host Selugadu VI

Native American celebration set for
Saturday November 17

PICKENS — In observance of Native American Heritage Month, the Pickens County Cultural Commission invites the public to join the friends of the Pickens County Museum for a special, and free, day of milling, memories and a Native American Celebration at the Hagood Mill Historic Site & Folklife Center. The Mill will be operating, rain or shine, on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

“Selugadu” (Cherokee for cornbread) celebrates the area’s Native American influences. A number of groups will be represented, including individuals born and raised here, as well as those who have made South Carolina their home.

Hosted by “Reedy River Intertribal,” this sixth annual event will begin with a “Presentation of the Colors,” honoring America’s veterans, and will continue throughout the day with a great program of drumming, dancing, singing, storytelling, demonstrations and games. Reedy River’s “Sachem” (head-man), Pat Langley, will be present to interpret Native American culture, along with Dr. Will Goins, Chief Executive Officer of the Eastern Cherokee, Southern Iroquois and United Tribes of South Carolina.

Election Day next Tuesday

COUNTY — After a long and grueling political year, the November general election is finally nearly upon us.

From the decertification of dozens of candidates for the June primary election to lawsuits and allegations flying between candidates and party officials in the months since, this political season has been filled with more turmoil than any in recent memory, and many voters will be glad just to have the election over come next Tuesday night.

Not only will local voters get their say in whether Democrat Barack Obama remains in the White House or is knocked out by Republican challenger Mitt Romney, but several local seats are up for grabs and should feature tight races to determine who will represent the people of Pickens County.

Fall Fest set for Easley Saturday

EASLEY — United Christian Ministries (UCM) will host its first-ever Fall Fest 5K Run and Walk this Saturday from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at the amphitheater and Old Market Square in downtown Easley.

Since 1989, UCM has been serving people in need throughout the Pickens and northern Anderson (Powdersville) communities. At its inception, UCM was supported by approximately 48 supporting churches. Today, more than 80 area churches provide resources through faithful financial gifts, donations of food and clothing, and volunteers who are truly the hearts and hands of UCM services.
A cooperative effort, UCM helps people in Pickens County in need of food, clothing, winter warmth, and help with household items like rent, utility payments and electricity. They are able to help those in need because of the generous philanthropy of people in the Pickens community who have the provisions to donate to this cornerstone organization.
