All those in favor of keeping the moon?

On The Way
By Olivia Fowler

Aren’t you glad they didn’t blow up the moon? I didn’t even know they ever thought of doing it until I heard it on NBC World News. Apparently there was a plan devised sometime during the ‘50s to send an atomic bomb to the moon to destroy it in order to make an impression on the Soviet Union to show how powerful America was.

This was back during the Cold War. The reasoning seems to have been that although the Russians got the cosmonauts into space, we would see to it that they didn’t reach the moon first by eliminating it as a possible destination.

What a brilliant plan. Someone actually thought of it. And had the audacity to suggest it in a meeting. I wonder how it was included on the agenda.

It probably came after the Pledge of Allegiance under New Business, Item A, listed as Plan to Blow Up Moon.

All About Ben
By Ben Robinson

One of my bad habits came back to haunt me recently.

On Wednesdays I run a route delivering newspapers to stores so that they can sell the copies, people can be informed about their community, and most importantly, I can earn money for every stop, putting some distance between me and the poor house.

I generally never lock my car doors. For most of my life this has been because I knew that any self-respecting thief would be embarrassed to be seen snooping in my car. Somebody might think that’s their car after all.

“No, I don’t own this messy car,” the thief would probably say if one of his friends saw him. “I’m just stealing stuff.”

A math whiz I am not

Life as I KNow It

Considering my proclivity toward degree-seeking in the realms of higher education, one might think that I was always an excellent student.

To that I say pish-posh (in my best written British accent).

Last night for homework, Emerson, my third grader, had a math sheet focusing on geometry — specifically identifying right, acute and obtuse angles. Here I was thinking I would at least be able to help my children get through elementary school math.

I was not exposed to geometry until my freshman year in high school. Having done well in junior high pre-algebra and algebra, I was placed in an honors geometry course that ninth grade year. That, I believe, is the year when numbers turned into some mocking form of hieroglyphics that made absolutely no sense to me whatsoever.

Life-changing wreck leads local ‘outlaw

One of the profound blessings of my job, aside from certain liberties and freedoms afforded me in my writing, is the opportunity I have to develop and investigate feature stories.

My interest in people has been cultivating for as long as I can recall. When I was younger, my mom and I would go to Aventura Mall on Saturdays, and as much as I enjoyed the girlie-girl aspect of shopping, I equally treasured quiet time spent sitting on a bench outside the food court people-watching.
People and their stories fascinate me. They always have, and I suspect they always will.

As many of my regular readers know, my passion for people and writing has transcended the Courier, as I continue to work on a book about the various personal stories and significances of people’s tattoos.
