3 charged in crime spree
CLEMSON — Clemson police arrested three men last week in a recent crime spree in the city, charging each with 16 different counts ranging from malicious injury to property to grand larceny.
According to a release from Clemson Police Chief Jimmy Dixon, the city experienced a rash of auto burglaries, thefts of property and malicious damage to both personal and real property within the downtown area.
Late on the night of April 19 into the morning of April 20, patrol officers were able to develop a suspect vehicle and get a description of the vehicle’s driver using street cameras in the downtown area. In addition, a cell phone was found at one of the incident locations, and putting the pieces together led to the identity of one of the suspects. From there, investigators were able to figure out the identities of the other two suspects.

PICKENS — Pickens County recently cancelled more than $500,000 worth of fire contracts with the city of Pickens. As a result, city administrator Katherine Brackett said, the city was forced to make some permanent adjustments in its budget.
“First, we added on the fire fee and, secondly, we contracted our commercial solid waste. Not residential,” she said. “Commercial solid waste was losing close to $60,000 a year, which means of the approximately 130 customers using it; the fees were not high enough to fund the service.”
Pickens honors Austin
Pickens’ Main Street was covered with red, white and blue and yellow ribbons this week in memory of PFC Barrett Austin, who lost his life after an IED attack in Afghanistan. Pictured above, Town and Country Florist owner Sheila Bennett and Pickens Mayor David Owens hang a yellow ribbon on one of the many trees along Main Street on Tuesday morning. Bennett said that when a tragedy like this happens to a family here in Pickens County, it brings home the fact that we are at war. Owens added that Austin did not only pay the ultimate sacrifice for our country, he did it to provide freedom for all of us here in Pickens County and should be honored as a hero. Flags all over the county were flown at half-mast in honor of Austin.

The saga of Mr. Jones
On The Way
By Olivia Fowler
I nearly ran down a turkey gobbler on my way to church. He was pretty big and was crossing Roanoke Church Road when I came around the bend. I barely missed him. I haven’t seen a live turkey up that close in a long time. Not since the days of Mr. Jones, Grandmama’s prize turkey who strutted around her yard and terrorized all the grandchildren.
Mr. Jones was more vicious and aggressive than a pit bull and would attack any child under four feet tall. We wouldn’t venture out if we spotted him outside. Unfortunately, there were times when he was in the area and we couldn’t see him from the front porch.
