Pickens Rec schedules day camps
PICKENS — Pickens Recreation will host nine one-week sessions of summer day camp this summer.
The day camps, held at the Pickens Recreation Center on Sangamo Road, are for ages 6-12 and run from 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. daily.
The sessions will be June 10-14, June 17-21, June 24-28, July 8-12, July 15-19, July 22-26, July 29-Aug. 2, Aug. 5-9 and Aug. 12-16.
Cost for the camp is $70 per child per week or $40 per child per half-week. A price adjustment is available for additional siblings per week. A $25 non-refundable registration fee is due by May 24, which includes a camp T-shirt. Late registration fees are $35.
Breakfast and lunch will be furnished again this summer, June 10–Aug. 9. There is no transportation for field trips, so each week the camp will have on-site activities that will include sports, movies, water days, games, bike days, arts and crafts, etc.
Murphy brothers take home 5 golds
LIBERTY — The Berkshire-Pickens Wrestling Club hosted a USAW sanctioned tournament on Saturday at Liberty High School, and a club-record 28 members took home medals.
The tournament featured 100 wrestlers from all over the upstate
Liberty brothers Cole and Chris Murphy took golds in both Greco-Roman and Freestyle, while younger brother Kaleb garnished his first gold in Freestyle.
Tanner Chambers, also of Liberty, also took home double gold for the fourth time this season.
Six Mile set to host Issaqueena 6K race
SIX MILE — Six Mile will host the first-ever Issaqueena’s Flight for the Fight 6k at the town’s Issaqueena Festival on May 18 at 8 a.m.
The race will start and end in downtown Six Mile near town hall, and proceeds from the race will benefit the Pickens County Cancer Association
There will be awards in all age categories and a raffle for all race participants. For more information, contact admin@flightforthefight.com.

Rogers golf tourney scheduled for May 12
PICKENS — The ninth annual Charles F. Rogers Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament is scheduled for May 18.
The tournament, which annually benefits a male and female senior basketball player from Pickens High School planning to attend a university, college or technical school, is set to kick off with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start at Pickens Country Club.
The tournament will follow a captain’s choice format, and entry costs $50 per person for a four-person team. Hole sponsorships are available for $50 as well, and prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place teams, longest drive and closest to the pin.
Lunch will be provided from 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m.
“Since we established this scholarship fund, we have been blessed with so many supporting us,” organizer Butch Morris said. “We have donated more than $10,000 in scholarship money as well as donations within our community since Charles passed away in 2004.”

Number One Volleyball Camp sets 2013 dates
EASLEY — Dates for the Number One Volleyball Camp have been set for 2013. The camp will be held at the Larry Bagwell Gymnasium at 111 Walkers Way in Easley. Session One, for 9th-12th Elite Players will be held June 19-21 from 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. Session Two, for rising 2nd through 4th graders, will be held June 24-27, from 9 a.m.-noon. Session Three, for rising 5th through 9th graders, will be held June 24-27, from 1:30-5 p.m.
The initial brochure for the camp incorrectly lists the dates for Sessions Two and Three incorrectly, director Peggy Anthony said.
“I apologize for my negligent error and sincerely thank everyone and the media for helping get the word out,” said Anthony.

PFC Barrett L. Austin
Easley — PFC Barrett Lyle Austin, 20, of Easley, died April 21, 2013 in Landstuhl, Germany, of injuries sustained when his vehicle was attacked by an enemy improvised explosive device in Wardak Province, Afghanistan, April 17. He was assigned to the 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga. PFC Austin was born in Easley on Nov. 10, 1992 to Curt and Yolanda Buck Austin. He was a 2011 graduate of Pickens High School and was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church in Easley.
Surviving in addition to his parents is his wife, Heather Hooker Austin of Fort Stewart, Ga.; two sisters, Summer Harris and Jordan Austin both of Easley; a nephew, Machen Harris of Easley; grandparents, Don and Betty Austin of Pickens and Benny and Helen Buck of Darlington; his great grandmother, Gertie Jones of Darlington; his uncles and aunts, Donnie and Rhonda Austin of Pickens and Ernie and Rita Buck of Darlington.
Springing into festival season!

Liberty plans second- annual
Spring Festival and Cruz-In
With spring finally upon us, the festival season will continue this Saturday with the city of Liberty’s second-annual Spring Festival and Cruz-In.
Coinciding with the festival, the city will kick off its Music in the Park series, and The Parenting Place’s 17th annual “Ride for the Child” will make its final stop in Liberty to present awards.
The “Ride for the Child” will begin with registration at Bi-Lo in Pickens from 9-11 a.m., followed by a scenic ride along Highway 11, ultimately ending at the festival. Pre-registration is available for $25 for the ride, and cost will be $30 on the day of the event.
