2 arrests made in string of larcenies
Mopeds, motorcycles, vehicles, trailers among items reported stolen
CLEMSON — Clemson police made two arrests last week in a recent string of thefts of vehicles, mopeds and motorcycles.
According to a release from Clemson Police Chief Jimmy Dixon, the department has recently received numerous reports of stolen property, including 23 mopeds, four vehicles, six motorcycles and five utility-type trailers.
As a result, the city initially asked Aug. 27 for the public’s help in locating Chadwick Marion Abercrombie, 24, who they said was known to be in the surrounding Pickens County area and the Tamassee area of Oconee County.

1800s medicine show, fireworks added to Founders Day festivities
PICKENS — The City of Pickens’ second annual Founders Day Festival is scheduled for next Saturday, with a pair of new and exciting additions.
New this year will be an authentic medicine show. Based upon an actual medicine show of the early 1800s, the traveling troupe from Ohio will bring magic, juggling, feats of strength and dexterity, fire-eating and escapology to the event. The show will go on throughout the day.

Hospital honors Barnes

EASLEY — The Board of Directors of Baptist Easley Hospital passed a resolution honoring Garnet A. Barnes at its September meeting.
Barnes, who died in March 2013, served for 27 years on the Boards of Palmetto Health and Easley Baptist Hospital and helped lead the construction of a new patient wing, along with both a state-of-the-art Emergency Department and Birthplace wing. He continued to be a strong supporter of Baptist Easley Hospital and was responsible for encouraging and overseeing the advancement of the hospital to its present position as the provider of choice for Pickens County.
The resolution expressed Baptist Easley’s deep appreciation to Garnet Barnes for his many years of service and dedication to the hospital. A copy was presented to Polly Barnes, his beloved wife of 67 years, as an expression of sincere appreciation.
Barnes was born in Liberty on March 13, 1924, and lived most of his life in Pickens County. He was a 1942 graduate of Easley High School and a member of the Easley Athletic Hall of Fame and held track and field records that stood for many years. He attended Furman University and served as a Trustee, founded Barnes Real Estate and Barnes Insurance Agency in Easley, and dedicated his life to the improvement of the Easley community and helping businesses and individuals. He was a recipient of the State of South Carolina’s highest award, the Order of the Palmetto.
Driver killed after moped hits van
EASLEY — An Easley man lost his life after the moped he was driving collided with a van on Saturday evening.
According to a release from Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley, Roy Alderman Jr., 25, was driving a moped at the intersection of Hillcrest Drive and Fleetwood Drive in Easley ta about 7:30 p.m. when he ran a stop sign and struck a van.
Alderman was pronounced dead at Baptist Easley Hospital from multiple blunt force traumas, Kelley said.
The accident is being investigated by the Easley Police Department.
Pickens vet Boroughs publishes third book

PICKENS — Pickens native Zig Boroughs has completed his third book about the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment titled The 508th Connection.
A Private’s Eye View of World War II was published in 1989, and The Devil’s Tale, stories of the 508th Red Devils was published in 1992.
Boroughs was discharged at Fort Bragg, N.C., on Nov. 7, 1945. The next day he accepted a job as a math and science teacher and boys and girls basketball teams coach at Pickens High School — his own alma mater.
“When I arrived home after my army discharge in 1945, the challenges of adult civilian life excited me tremendously,” writes Boroughs. “I anticipated with a passion living as a husband and father, no longer separated by the Atlantic Ocean and a dangerous war from my wife and child. Noorai receives DAR national appointment
CLEMSON — Mari R. Noorai, Regent of the Andrew Pickens Chapter of Clemson, received a national appointment in the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) from the newly elected President General Lynn F. Young of Houston, Texas.
Because of Noorai’s achievements with the Junior American Citizens Club that she organized and advises at the Tamassee DAR School, Young asked Miss Noorai to serve as the SE Division National Vice Chairman Junior AmericanCitizens Committee–Service and Creative Expression.
Noorai is a fifth-generation DAR member in the upstate; her great-great grandmother, the late Martha Elizabeth Bowen Nimmons a long time resident of Pickens, was a Charter Member.

County museum exhibition features S.C. Fiber Artists
PICKENS — The Pickens County Cultural Commission recently announced the opening of a special exhibition at the Pickens County Museum of Art and History.
From 6 until 8 p.m. on Sept. 7, the museum will host a reception to open “Connecting Concept and Medium: Fiber Art in South Carolina”. The exhibition, featuring works by 27 of the state’s finest fiber artisans, will continue through Nov. 14.
“Connecting Concept and Medium,” being mounted in all three of the museum’s changing galleries, is an invitational exhibition that, in some sense of the word, will survey the wide ranges of fiber art being currently created in South Carolina by established, as well as up-and-coming artists.
While there are hints to the history and evolution of fiber art and prevailing ideologies, this exhibit is less a history show and more about the artists working in all fiber categories including weaving, needlework, quilting, wearables, paper & felting, mixed fiber, surface design, sculpture and installation.

Student research takes aim at concussions

CLEMSON — Clemson University researchers and students are tackling a national health concern by advancing concussion awareness and prevention through research.
David Kwartowitz, John DesJardins and Delphine Dean, assistant professors in the department of bioengineering at Clemson, are mentoring an undergraduate Creative Inquiry student research team that is investigating the scientific implications of concussions. The students designed a dummy that is equipped with brain sensors that provide concussion data.

Pickens Chamber to host golf tournament
PICKENS — The 2013 Pickens Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament will be held at the Rock at Jocassee golf course located off S.C. 11 on Friday, Sept. 27, with check in at 8:30 a.m. and a shotgun start at 9:15 a.m.
The team cost is $200 per team or $50 per player. Sponsorships are from $750 for tournament sponsor, $400 for iron sponsor, $100 for hole sponsor and $75 for tee sponsor. A light breakfast and a lunch will be provided along with prizes.
