Pickens County YMCA to host Tri the Ridge Sprint Triathlon

COUNTY — The Pickens County YMCA will host its annual Tri the Ridge Sprint Triathlon on Saturday, Sept. 14.

The event will take place at the Pickens YMCA located at 2223 Gentry Memorial Hwy. The silver sponsors for this year’s race are Advanced Family Dentistry and Kelly’s Family Pharmacy.

The Triathlon event will consist of a 300 yard swim, 13 mile bike and a 3.1 mile run. A relay team option is also available for the Triathlon event. All participants receive a t-shirt and are timed.

• Vendor apps now available for Fall for Liberty 2013

 

Fall for Liberty 2013, a bluegrass event, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. in downtown Liberty.

Vendors are now being accepted and can apply online at www.libertyscevents.com. Deadline for applications is Oct. 14. payment and forms can be dropped at Liberty City Hall. The event committee only accepts one vendor from any direct sales company (i.e. 31, Avon, etc.) and limits the number of spots for food vendors. Vendor spots are first-come, first-served when payment is received.

Pickens Presbyterian CDC plans fall festival

PICKENS — Pickens Presbyterian Church Child Development Center is hosting a free, fall festival on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 311 West Main Street in Pickens.

Highlights of the day’s event will include inflatables and games for the children, as well as child performances by La Dance Studio, A Tae Kwon Do demonstration, the Sweet Potato Pie Kids and Carl Woody will be performing a Magic Show and balloon art. A silent auction will take place featuring many great items.

We’ve grown accustomed to the rain. And that’s a good thing, as it’s inevitable. The pattern has grown so predictable that it is more remarkable to see a patch of blue sky than thick black clouds. No matter the weather in other parts of the county, we can safely say that the stretch of Rice’s Creek Road where Fowler Farm is located will get rainfall every afternoon without fail.

Pickens lies north of us. Six Mile is to the west, Liberty is east and Atlanta is south.

I came across this commencement speech given by George Saunders, a New York Times Best Selling American writer, and I was inspired by his words. Understanding that my column isn’t long enough to reprint his speech in its entirety, I am going to break this into one of my “series” — with commentary (of course). I, obviously, believe Saunders’ words are worthy of being read.

Avenell Hunter Welborn

Easley — Avenell Hunter Welborn, 84, of Easley, wife of the late Joe B. Welborn, died Monday, Sept. 2, 2013.

Born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Rev. Fred B. and Mattie Powell Hunter, Mrs. Welborn graduated from Easley High School in 1946 and also graduated from Draughans Business School. She retired from the Payroll Department of Alice Manufacturing Company after 32 years of service and attended St. Andrew United Methodist Church where she belonged to the Lucille Searcy Sunday School Class. Mrs. Welborn was a volunteer with Baptist Easley Hospital for seven years.

Surviving are a son, Arden Welborn (Theresa Hanebrink); granddaughter, Jessica Laura Welborn; sister, Frances Turner; brother, Garvin Hunter (Carol); four nieces and nephews, four great-nieces and nephews and one great-great-nephew.
