Blue Flame football available on internet

PICKENS — Out of town or not able to come to Blue Flame Stadium on Friday night?  Now there is an opportunity to listen to the game on the internet.  This is a free option that fans can access whether at home or away from home.

  The Greer game on October 18th and the game against Blue Ridge October 25th will be available.  The listener can go the Pickens High School athletic webpage and go to the football page .  The live event link will be able to be seen and accessed through the football home page.

Man sentenced for threatening senator

EASLEY — An Easley man was sentenced to more than seven years in prison for making a death threat to Sen. Lindsey Graham.

Simon Peter Long, 32, was sentenced to 87 months in prison for the 2012 crime, which he pleaded guilty to in June. In addition, Judge Ross Anderson Jr. said Long will serve three years of supervised release after his time in prison.

U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles said that in a letter dated Nov. 27, 2012, Long wrote to Graham “I hope you are happy with the job you are doing as U.S. Senator cause frankly I am not, along with a bunch of other people just like me. I’m going to take great pride in kill (sic) you. So watch your back cause its comeing (sic). You can count on it. Yours truly, Simon Long.”

Pumpkin Festival a success

A huge crowd was on hand as Pumpkintown hosted its annual Pumpkin Festival over the weekend. The throngs of people in attendance enjoyed the usual festival attractions, including arts and crafts, food and live music as they helped Pickens County usher in the fall.

Late-night wreck kills man

LIBERTY — A Central man was killed in a two-vehicle wreck early Saturday morning.

According to Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley, Preston Calvin Batson Jr., of 137 Windy Court, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred around 2:30 a.m. on S.C. Highway 93 near Quarry Road in Liberty.

According to Kelley, Batson’s vehicle crossed a double yellow line and struck an oncoming vehicle. Batson was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from the vehicle, Kelley said.

Easley business owner seeking ‘fair’ treatment

EASLEY — An Easley businessman appeared in front of city council Monday night to demand fair treatment for the owners of tow trucks in the city.

Chris Merck, owner of Merck Automotive, said that though he has made several attempts to get into the city’s rotation of places called when a tow truck is needed, so far he has been unable to join in the rotation.

Currently only seven tow truck operators are on that list. Merck felt there should be room for at at least one more.

Six Mile Farmer’s Depot growing

SIX MILE — The Six Mile Farmer’s Depot, located at the old fire house in downtown Six Mile, strives to provide locally produced agricultural products and provisions for the residents of the Six Mile area.

The Farmer’s Depot is an indoor market that runs from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday afternoons, rain or shine. The market will be open on Thursdays through Oct. 24, as well as Nov. 21.

A free customer appreciation BBQ will be held on Oct. 24 at the market, which will resume in the spring of 2014.

Six Mile mayor Roy Stoddard feels that the Farmer’s Depot provides a “sense of place for our area, based on its agricultural history.”

County park gets new site

COUNTY — Visitors to Mile Creek Park in Six Mile will be able to streamline their trips beginning next month.

Pickens County Council announced recently that the park’s new website, www.visitmilecreekpark.com, will become available to the public after 5 p.m. on Nov. 4. The website will allow visitors to select a campsite using an interactive map, make reservations and pay via credit card or PayPal. Reservations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis.

The site will also feature a wilderness game for children, which is customized to help kids learn about the local area. Questions rotate through a selection

City of Pickens selected by ACOG as pilot city

PICKENS — The Appalachian Council of Governments’ Department of Planning and Economic Development recently received a $55,000 federal grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission to build an online “Entrepreneur Friendly Toolkit.”

The city of Pickens has been selected as a pilot city to build its toolkit and encourage entrepreneurs.

The toolkit will take local leaders through eight interactive “steps” which will help their communities organize themselves around supporting local entrepreneurs and small business.

Seven upstate United Ways team up for Born Learning

UPSTATE — Seven United Ways serving 10 Upstate counties launched a new effort this week to help maximize the early learning potential of young children.

Born Learning Upstate SC is a public engagement campaign that aims to help parents, caregivers and communities provide young children with quality learning opportunities. The campaign is built around research that shows children are “born learning,” with the first three years of a child’s life proven to be an especially critical time.

“This is when that brain is truly a sponge,” said Lisa Williams, board chair of United Way of Oconee County and a sergeant with the Seneca Police
