3rd Friday event planned in uptown Pickens this week

PICKENS — Quite a number of stores and restaurants will again be open until 9 p.m. this Friday for the monthly third Fridays event in Pickens.

Included will be such merchants as Nestfeathers, Shabby Chic, Oh Joy!, Antiques and Uniques as well as the Court Street Gallery.

The Gatehouse Restaurant and Michaels will offer great food and beverage. It’s a great opportunity for everyone to enjoy the great specials, music, refreshments, Halloween candy and the autumn decorations. See page 10A for advertising.

Pickens County Habitat for Humanity seeks build partners

COUNTY — Pickens County Habitat for Humanity is presently seeking build partners to help provide partial funding and volunteers to assist low-income Pickens County families in building “safe, decent, and affordable” homes. A build partner can be any group of volunteers willing to come alongside approved homeowner families and assist them by volunteering time on the build site and providing funds to purchase needed construction materials.

Some previous build partners include Easley Presbyterian Church, the Senior Class of Liberty High School, Cornell Dubilier, SCBT, Lowes of Easley, Clemson United Methodist Church, and the employees of Pickens County.

It’s October, and I really don’t have anything appropriate to wear.

Pink is the official color of October, as this is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And, pretty much by design, I don’t own anything pink. My brother Thom had a shirt that certainly looked pink to me, nut he said it was actually “chartreuse.” He’s a dyer, so I have to trust him on colors, especially ones I cannot spell.

PICKENS — On Saturday, October 12, the Lady Flame sweep through the field at their own tournament to win gold. Pickens started pool play against a much improved Westside team, winning 25-8, 25-19. Then the team defeated West Oak 25-10, 25-14 and finished undefeated in pool play by beating Chesnee 25-7, 25-18.

Literacy group to hold used book sale October 18 and 19

PICKENS — Books at bargain prices will soon be available during the Pickens County Literacy Association’s semi-annual Used Book Sale.

The two-day event will be held in the All Saints Hall of Pickens Presbyterian Church, located at 311 West Main Street. The sale will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19.

Proceeds from this event help the PCLA continue its program of volunteer tutors helping adults improve their reading skills.

12th Annual Hagood Mill Storytelling Fest is Saturday, Oct. 19

PICKENS — The Pickens County Museum of Art & History invites you to a special, and free, day of milling, stories, tall tales and lots of memories at the Hagood Mill Historic Site & Folklife Center. The Mill will be operating, rain or shine, on Saturday, October 19 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Itau Fowler Ellison

Easley — Mrs. Itau Fowler Ellison, 87, wife of the late Homer Charles Ellison, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2013 at her home.

Born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Thomas Julius and Maude Maybell Pilgrim, Mrs. Ellison retired from Woven Electronics and was a member of Zion United Methodist Church, where she was active in the church and belonged to United Ministries.

Surviving are a son, Roy Charles Ellison (Kathy) of Easley; a daughter, Joyce Elaine Ellison of Easley; two grandchildren, Joshua Ellison and Amanda Bennefield (Clint); three great-grandchildren, Tyler Musselman, and Reagan and Jackson Bennefield; and her extended family, Jane and Tessa O’Rourke, and Dylan and Braden Mills.
