There, the town council randomly selected clergy to open their meetings with a prayer. Susan Galloway objected to the prayers, which were mostly Christian. She argued by allowing that, the town supported one faith over others and violated the First Amendment. The town lost in the 2nd Federal Circuit Court and sued Galloway in the U.S. Supreme Court.

Joy Israel Ross

Liberty — Joy Israel Ross, 49, of 308 Campground Road, died Tuesday at Baptist Easley Hospital.

Born in Fletcher, N.C., she was the wife of Lloyd “Nub” Ross of the home and a daughter of Roy and Sharon Wilkie Israel of Hendersonville, N.C. She was a graduate of Wren High School and worked at Ball Mart in Liberty. She was also a member of Mills River Baptist Church in Fletcher, N.C.

Hagood Mill site manager Ed Bolt dies

PICKENS — Hagood Mill site manager Ed Bolt died unexpectedly at age 60 last week.

In the wake of Bolt’s death, Pickens County Museum director Allen Coleman said the mill will be closed until further notice. This Saturday’s scheduled Celtic Christmas concert is among the events cancelled, although Coleman said operations should resume sometime after the new year.

Bolt was laid to rest last week at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

SWU Men’s soccer team claims NCCAA national championship

Members of the Southern Wesleyan University men’s soccer team celebrate their NCCAA championship victory earlier this month.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Southern Wesleyan University men’s soccer team recently claimed the first national title in school history, defeating Lee University 1-0 in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) championship game on Dec. 7.

The lone goal came off the foot of Joao Oliveira in the 33rd minute, scoring off a deflected save from a shot by Douglas Andrade. It was the sixth goal of the season for Oliveira.

Delegation sets date for annual meeting

DACUSVILLE — The Pickens County Legislative Delegation will hold its annual public meeting at the Dacusville Community Center on Jan. 2.

Reports from organizations and boards will be heard starting at 5:30 p.m. The floor will be opened for public comments at 6 p.m.
