Volleyball registration starts at Pickens Rec

PICKENS — Volleyball registration will be taken Jan. 6-31 at the Pickens Recreation Center on Sangamo Road in Pickens.

The following age divisions are offered: 2nd-4th grades; 5th-7th grades; 8th-9th grades; 10th-12th grades.

Following registration, a skills/evaluation day will be held for each age division. The registration fee provides a jersey to be kept. The fee is $45 for in-city residents and $55 for out-of-city residents. Birth certificates are required at registration.

If you are interested in coaching or need additional information, please call the Recreation Dept. at 878-2296.

PICKENS — Spring soccer registration will be taken Jan. 6-31 at the Pickens Recreation Center on Sangamo Road in Pickens.

The following age divisions are offered: 5 & 6, 7 & 8, 9 & 10, 11 & 12. Depending on size of leagues, the 9 & 10 and 11 & 12 divisions may have to be combined.

Easley Recreation hosting volleyball, flag football signup

EASLEY — Easley Recreation has opened registration for the spring volleyball and flag football seasons.

Signups are open until Feb. 7, and cost is $60 for in-city children and $80 for out-of-city children.

Flag football registration is open for children ages 6-14, while volleyball is for children in grades 2-7.

Dixie Softball registration starts

It may be winter outside, but softball season is just around the corner. Dixie Softball of Easley will be holding signups for the 2014 season on Saturdays during the month of January at Hibbett Sports in Easley.

EASLEY — Dixie Softball of Easley will hold signups for its 12th season on Saturdays during January. In an effort to make signups easier this year, parents will have the option of signing up online or in person.

To register online, visit easleysoftball.com and click on the registration link. Online registration will consist of completing the registration form and then mailing a check to Dixie Softball of Easley. Online registrations will not be considered complete until payment is received.

In-person registration will be held during four Saturdays in January at Hibbett Sports. Registration is scheduled for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 18 and 25 at Hibbett Sports in Easley, which is located between The Home Depot and Publix on

Clemson plans events for Martin Luther King Jr. Day

CLEMSON — Clemson University is observing Martin Luther King Jr. Day this year with a series of events Jan. 20 to 23.

The 14th annual MLK Day of Service and blood drive will be Monday, Jan. 20, on the MLK Day holiday. Students, faculty and staff will use their days off as a day to help others around the community. Check in for the day of service begins at 8 a.m. at the Hendrix Student Center. Volunteers will be transported to various community agencies to work until noon. Agencies participating include the Animal Rescue Fund, Clemson Child Development Center, Foothills YMCA, Our Daily Bread, Pickens County Habitat for Humanity and The Arts Center.

SUE GILLESPIE

PICKENS — Mae Sueko “Sue” Agena Gillespie, 74, wife of Calvin “Coy” Gillespie, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013.

Mrs. Gillespie was born of Japanese heritage in Oahu, HI, a daughter of the late Jiro and Kami Yonamine Agena. She was retired from Ryobi Motor Products in Pickens and was employed with The Pickens County School District as a bus monitor for special needs children. Mrs. Gillespie attended Bob Jones University and was a member of Fairview Independent Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 38 years, Calvin “Coy” Gillespie of the home, a son
