Beyond the Bull to join annual Helping Hands benefit fundraiser
CENTRAL — In August 1984, an emergency shelter and foster home for abused and neglected children from across the upstate of South Carolina opened its doors.
Helping Hands of Clemson received its first children into the house that was licensed to care for 16 children that year.
Today, the house is licensed to care for 54 children. To date, Helping Hands officials have cared for an estimated 8,000, the majority coming from Anderson, Greenville, Oconee and Pickens counties.

UPSTATE — Northland Communications has scheduled the grand reopening of its new customer service center located at 9A Boardwalk Place in Seneca.
The new center showcases the fastest Internet speeds featured on the latest tech toys and high definition streaming available through online content providers, allowing customers to experience their services and entertainment products first-hand.

Y2Y 10K Challenge set for April 26
COUNTY — The Pickens County YMCA is bringing back its popular Y2Y 10K Challenge.
With the course, participants will run from the Easley YMCA to the Pickens YMCA, which is exactly 10K (6.2 miles). Registration for the Y2Y 10K Challenge is open from now until April 24.
Participants will park at the Pickens YMCA on April 26. Buses will transport everyone at 7:10 a.m. to the Easley Y, and the race will start at 7:30 a.m. There will be fun activities at the Pickens Y for families and kids while they await their loved ones’ arrival.

Tommy Holcombe
Easley — Thomas Larry “Tommy” Holcombe, 66, husband of Joyce Beasley Holcombe, died, Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014.
Tommy was born in Greenville County, a son of the late Russell Thomas and Gladys Lucille Crane Holcombe. Tommy was retired from Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens as a licensed funeral director and embalmer. He was formerly employed with Coca Cola of Greenville as a sales representative. Tommy was a 1997 graduate of Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science in Atlanta, Ga. Tommy was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church in Easley where he formerly taught the college and career Sunday school class. He was always interested in the young people of the church and he formerly served as youth director at Cedar Rock Baptist

Black History Month, or National African-American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history.

County museum to kick off Pickens County Youth Arts ’14 with reception March 1
COUNTY — The Pickens County Cultural Commission recently announced that, in recognition of “National Youth Arts” month as well as “National Music in our Schools” month, March will once again be Pickens County Youth Arts Month.
The Pickens County Museum of Art and History and the schools of Pickens County will celebrate with a reception to kick off the month at the museum on Saturday, March 1, from 1-4 p.m.
A special “thank you” presentation for elementary schools will be made at 1:30 p.m., and an awards ceremony for the middle and high schools will be held at 2:30 p.m.
