Sweet Potato Pie Kids to perform at fundraising breakfast April 12
PICKENS — Sweet Potato Pie Kids, a bluegrass and old-time music band made up of top students from the Young Appalachian Musicians program, will perform during a special pancake breakfast at the GateHouse Restaurant in Pickens on Saturday, April 12.
The event, scheduled for 8 to 10:30 a.m., is a fundraiser for the YAM program. For $7 per person, the breakfast includes GateHouse pancakes, bacon or sausage, eggs, grits and a drink — plus entertainment by some of the Upstate’s most talented young musicians.
‘Heaven is for Real’ to be shown at Southern Wesleyan
CENTRAL — “Heaven is for Real,” a new Sony Pictures release, hits theaters April 16, but there’s no need to wait that long — Southern Wesleyan University will host a pre-release showing at 7 p.m. April 11 in the Newton Hobson auditorium on the Central campus.
The movie, based on the New York Times best-selling book of the same name, portrays the true story of a small-town father who must find the courage and conviction to share his son’s extraordinary, life-changing experience with the world.

Six Mile Baptist receives charter for Trail Life USA
SIX MILE — Six Mile Baptist Church is now officially chartered with Trail Life USA (TLUSA) as SC Troop 1001.
The church will host an informational meeting for the general public on Thursday, April 10, at 7 p.m. in the Roper Building, located at 150 N. Main St. in Six Mile.
The meeting is for anyone interested in becoming part of the troop as an adult leader or as a youth participant. TLUSA is a Christian outdoor program for boys and young men ages 5-24. For now, SC Troop 1001 will focus on boys, age 5 to 18 The overall program focuses on outdoor adventure, character, and leadership.
Adult leaders must be at least 18 years old and are required to sign a statement of Christian faith and values, undergo Child and Youth Safety Protection Training, submit to background checks,
Day knitting up kindness for the community

Lillian Day started making knit hats four years ago when she was 90. Since then she’s made 1,242, giving them to various charities, never accepting any pay. She’s given some to her pastor at Cedar Rock Baptist Church, who has used them in the church’s ministry into nursing homes. Others she has given to groups including Franklin Graham, who has used them as part of his international ministry. She has also made some baby-sized caps for the Tri County Pregnancy Center.
