Man faces murder charges

Third gun-related death
in three weeks in county
CENTRAL — A Central man is being held without bond at the Pickens County Detention Center facing a murder charge after police said he shot and killed a man following an altercation.
Pickens County Sheriff’s Office chief deputy Creed Hashe said a 911 call came in at around 8 p.m. last Thursday that there was a verbal altercation in the yard at a home at 111 Moser Trail in Central and one of more of the people involved may be armed.

Principals hired at high schools
COUNTY — The School District of Pickens County announced Tuesday that it had hired principals for two county high schools.
According to a release from district spokesman John Eby, Josh Young will be the new principal at Daniel High, while Gary Culler will lead Easley High.
Young, who will replace new district superintendent Dr. Danny Merck at Daniel, has served as principal of Walhalla High School since 2012.
Prior to his time at Walhalla High, Young spent his entire career in Pickens County. He

Pew bids district farewell at final meeting

COUNTY — The Pickens County School Board of Trustees bid farewell to Dr. Kelly Pew Monday night following her final meeting before taking a new job in Rock Hill.
Pew is set to leave the district today to take over as superintendent for Rock Hill Schools.
Pew thanked the school board for “a wonderful six years.”
“Everything that you have touched you have impacted positively,” board chairman Alex Saitta told Pew.

Wrestlers qualify for state squads
CENTRAL — Six members from the Berkshire-Pickens Wrestling Club have been selected to compete in national tournaments representing South Carolina.
Cadet wrestlers (born 98-99) Matt Frey (126 lbs.), Cole Murphy (132 lbs.) and brother Kris (152 lbs.) will compete for Team South Carolina in the Greco-Roman and Freestyle Wrestling Team Duals to be held in Daytona Beach, Fla., on June 10-14. This

Easley baseball coach Finley plans to retire
EASLEY — Easley High School baseball coach Roger Finley, one of the top baseball coaches in state history, has decided to hang up the cleats following this season.
Finley, who has spent 28 seasons as a head baseball coach, including the last 11 at Easley, was honored prior to the Green Wave’s regular-season-ending rivalry matchup with Pickens Monday evening.
Easley will head to T.L. Hanna Thursday to open the Class AAAA District I playoffs. The appearance marks the 28th consecutive playoff berth for Finley’s teams, each of his seasons as a head coach.

Music on the Market concert series starts this Friday in downtown Easley
Last year’s music series brought thousands to downtown Easley for a chance to listen to some great music and a little dancing. This years events will start this Friday in Easley.
EASLEY — The City of Easley recently announced the entertainment schedule for its 2014 Gilstrap Family Dealerships Music on the Market concert series.
“We are looking forward to another wonderful concert season here in downtown Easley,” said Scott Buckhiester, VP of operations with DunBurks Premier Events, which is contracted by the City of Easley to manage its events.
“The lineup for this year is filled with some of our very favorites returning and some exciting bands that are well known in the area but are coming to Easley for the first time,” Buckhiester said.
The concerts will take place in the Easley City Amphitheater each Friday night in May and June. The bands will start at 7 p.m. and play until 10 p.m. Concessions and entertainment for the kids will also be available.

Pickens View to open for National Day of Prayer
PICKENS — Thursday is the National Day of Prayer. The emphasis this year is “One Voice United in Prayer.”
Pickens View Wesleyan Church will be sponsoring an event Thursday in the church sanctuary at 744 Bethlehem Ridge Road off S.C. Highway 8 in Pickens. The church will be open for an hour in the morning, an hour at noon and an hour in the evening.
Visitors are welcome to come at any of the three times. Someone will greet you and give you a prayer guide at 6:30 to 7:30 a.m.; noon to 1 p.m.; or 7 to 8 p.m.

Easley High NJROTC unit competes in 13th annual Goodwill Mud Run
EASLEY — Easley’s Naval Junior Reserve Officer Corps (NJROTC) unit entered three four-person teams in the Spring 2014 Goodwill/St. Francis Sports Medicine Mud Run held April 12-13 at SC-TAC (formally The Donaldson Center).
The event consisted of 36 obstacles stretched over a 3.5-mile course with mud pits, walls to climb over and obstacles requiring team effort to complete. Easley’s three teams were the A team consisting of Justin Hill, Brandon Marsh, Eric Crenshaw and Jacob Davis, the B team consisting of Freddy Juarez, Tyler Burton, Floyd Horne and Matthew West, and the C team consisting of Ryan Jeanes, Chase Wengerd, Anthony
