Holcombe to be honored by Liberty and Cannon Hospital
LIBERTY — The public is invited to the dedication of the Doctor’s Memorial and Meditation Garden in Freedom Park, Liberty, South Carolina on Wednesday, May 7, at noon.
Cannon Memorial Hospital and the City of Liberty will be honoring Dr. J.K. “Jake” Holcombe for his years of service to the community.
There will be a reception following the dedication.

Saturday was a great day, because I discovered relatives I didn’t know I had. Fowler is related to everybody in the county, but I’m not, or at least that’s what I thought until I went to the fifth annual Reunion of Upcountry Families at Southern Wesleyan University.
And there, I found relatives I didn’t know existed.
My people hail from Eastern North Carolina and Tidewater Virginia. While wandering around the room scanning family genealogy tables, I discovered the Masters/Southerland table, which had a large graphic behind it listing all the family

Dear Editor,
On April 10, in a 6 to 0 vote, the Pickens County School Board named Dr. Danny Merck the new superintendent. Some asked why the school board didn’t implement a thorough search/selection process, examining many applicants, doing interviews and then making a selection? Actually, we did all that, but some may not realize it because the process began years ago.

United Way furniture sale to benefit homelessness programs
EASLEY — When real estate broker Justin Winter of Sotheby’s International Realty recently sold a waterfront home, he graciously assumed responsibility for the disbursement of furniture that the home owner didn’t want to move.
Winter talked with Venetta Berenz, a member of the United Way of Pickens County Board of Directors and volunteer for the Dream Center, about donating the furniture to charity.

Otis Elizabeth James
Easley — Mrs. Otis Elizabeth Gilstrap James, 91, wife of the late Calvin Edward “Buss” James, died Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Heartland Health Care Center.
Born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late William Benson and Mamie Medlin Gilstrap, Mrs. James retired from Mayfair Mills-Glenwood Division, and was a member of Jones Avenue Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and the GA’s.
