Barn quilt mounted at senior center
Commemorates gift of quilt and hooked rug
collection on display at fundraiser Saturday
PICKENS — On Tuesday, Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative placed a barn quilt created by the Upstate Heritage Quilt
Trail, on the Hagood Community Center at 129 Schoolhouse Street in Pickens.
It is a painting of the center portion of a “Bicentennial” quilt by the late Mary Granger that was donated to Senior Citizens of Pickens (SCOP) by her husband, Dr. James A. Granger of Brevard.
A barn quilt is a painting of a quilt on a square board that can be placed on the exterior of a building. Granger created and collected an impressive and valuable collection of quilts, hooked rugs, Depression glass, and sewing
SDPC names finalists for teacher and support employee of the year award
COUNTY — The finalists for the School District of Pickens County’s teacher and support employee of the year awards have been chosen.
The winner of each award will be announced at the district’s back-to-school celebration at Pickens High School at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 15. In addition to their awards, the winners and finalists will receive cash prizes sponsored by Southern Wesleyan University.
The finalists for teacher of the year are: Susan Orr – Six Mile Elementary School, Jared Roper – McKissick Elementary

Power Pac Dance performs at Walt Disney World Resort
Orlando, Fla. — Members of the Centre for Performing Arts Power PAC Dance Company became stars of their own Disney show on July 14 when they entertained resort guests at the Waterside Stage in Downtown Disney.
The group traveled from Easley to the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida to take part in the Disney Performing Arts program.
The dance ensemble, under the direction of Melanie Elrod and Taylor Lentz, entertained a large crowd of Downtown Disney guests with several show-stopping numbers, including “Bubblegum” by Bella Thorne and “Diva” by Beyoncé.
This was the group’s second visit to the resort with the Disney Performing Arts program.

Tinsley honored for half century of
service on PS&L board of directors
PICKENS — Jack Tinsley has played a role in the development of Pickens Savings and Loan for longer than many can remember.
Tinsley was honored recently at the company’s annual meeting with the Half Century Silver Cup by bank president Alex Gettys, an award given by the South Carolina Bankers Association to all employees and directors who have been in banking for 50 years.
