Clemson win leads to changing of the vane at Hillcrest
PICKENS — The main building at Hillcrest Memorial Park now has a new weather vane on display, thanks to Clemson’s 35-17 victory on the gridiron over rival South Carolina two weeks ago.
The idea of the interchangeable weather vane stemmed from a friendly rivalry between Clemson fan Andy Cone and Hillcrest founder Dwight Holder, a Gamecock fan.
The Hillcrest Memorial Park office was built in 1994, South Carolina won that year, so a Gamecock weather vane went up the inaugural year.
In the 21 years since, the Tiger has been displayed for 12 years and the gamecock for nine.
The past five years of the gamecock flying was the longest stretch since the local tradition started.
