Liberty sound booth named in honor of Winkler

LIBERTY — The sound booth for Liberty High School’s football stadium was named after longtime LHS public address announcer Doug Winkler during Monday night’s meeting of the Pickens County School Board.
Winkler served at the games for 37 years before passing away in December after a battle with lung cancer. After Winkler’s passing, several from the Liberty area approached the board about naming the public address booth after Winkler.

Annual Reunion of Upcountry Families
set for March 12-14
CENTRAL — The public is invited to the Reunion of Upcountry Families on March 12-14.
The free event will include cemetery tours, workshops devoted to family history and a large display of photos and other items from local families of the Old Pendleton District, which became present-day Anderson, Oconee and Pickens counties.

Murder, mayhem and moonshine will come to the stage in the play “Bad Boys of the Upcountry,” an original docudrama about the lives and families of two famous men who lived by their own laws during the brutal years of Reconstruction in Upstate South Carolina.

Pickens County Youth Arts Month set to be celebrated in March
PICKENS — The Pickens County Cultural Commission announced recently that, in recognition of “National Youth Arts” month as well as “National Music in our Schools” month, March has again been designated as Pickens County Youth Arts Month.
The Pickens County Museum of Art and History and the schools of Pickens County will celebrate with a reception for parents and students on Saturday March 7, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

PICKENS — The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office sent two teams of Explorers to the winter South Carolina Association of Law Enforcement Explorers (SCALE) Conference, which was recently hosted by the North Myrtle Beach Police Department.
