Government leaders honored at luncheon

Azalea Fest to kick off on April 17
PICKENS — The 31st annual Pickens Azalea Festival is set for April 17-18.
Pickens’ Main Street will close at 6 p.m. on April 17 to kick off the festival with the annual Friday night classic car cruise-in at 7 p.m. Classic cars, trucks, jeeps and motorcycles are welcome for the free event.
Main stage entertainment will be provided by Still Cruzin, which plays a variety of music to please every ear, including beach, R&B, country, Motown and rock.
Space is still available for arts and crafts vendors, commercial businesses and civic/non-profit organizations to display at the festival on Saturday. Applications are available at pickensazaleafestival.org, as is sponsorship information.
Charity gets donation in honor of Jacks

COUNTY — Friends of Barry and Lyle Jacks did not know what to do to comfort the couple after they lost their son, Dakota, in a plane crash last summer.
The friends ultimately decided to use their memory of Dakota to accomplish something positive, raising money for the Feed A Hungry Child program in Pickens County schools.
Coworkers of Lyle Jacks at Baptist Easley joined together last week to present their earnings to the program, which fills backpacks with food donations for Pickens County school children to bring home
3 Count Pro Wrestling comes back to Pickens
PICKENS — Pro wrestling will return to Pickens this Saturday as 3 Count Pro Wrestling invades Pickens Middle School.
The show, set to entertain young and old alike, will help kids in the area with dreams of competing in the Special Olympics.
NWA wrestling legend Nikita Koloff will be available for autographs, as will be former WCW
Lenten noon services set for Pickens
PICKENS — Community-wide Lenten services will be held on Tuesdays during Lent at Pickens churches, rotating as listed below. The ecumenical series is sponsored by the Pickens Ministerial Association and is open to the entire community. The brief services start at noon and are followed by a light lunch.

Easley’s Spring Fling to bring in the season April 11
EASLEY — The third annual Spring Fling in Easley, hosted by the Arts Council of Pickens County, is set to be held April 11, in conjuction with the opening day of the Easley Farmers Market.
Officials have planned a fun-filled day that will entertain everyone — from art entrepreneurs to those who may be viewing art for the first time.
This year’s event will feature more hands-on activities for children, organizers said.

Prayer during school
One of the most popular stories from last week’s paper was about the Pickens County School Board planning to consider starting meetings with prayer again.
This was thought to be illegal, but recent rulings have said it is OK as long as you follow certain guidelines. It will be interesting to see how this turns out, but this measure only controls prayers before school board meetings.

Easley man, 81, dies after wreck
EASLEY — An 81-year-old Easley man died after a three-vehicle collision on Saturday evening.
According to Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley, Robert Bowens, of 300 North 4th St., was pronounced dead at Baptist Easley Hospital.
Kelley said Bowens was a passenger in one of the three vehicles involved in the accident, which happened around 6:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 123 near Easley.
The accident is being investigated by the Easley Police Department, Kelley said.
