Why not try an ounce of prevention?
Why are so many of our mentally ill in jail instead of treatment? According to statistics, almost half of the jailed population in our country are suffering from some sort of mental illness. And Pickens County is not an exception.
These are the people who are locked up instead of treated. They also make up about half the homeless population. Many of our veterans are also among these populations.
Recently there was an opportunity for county council to secure funding through a grant to screen inmates for mental and substance abuse conditions before throwing them into the general population. Unfortunately for all of us, they chose not to do this.

Clemson research: Bad sleep habits linked to higher self-control risks
CLEMSON — Poor sleep habits can have a negative effect on self-control, which presents risks to individuals’ personal and professional lives, according to Clemson University researchers.
In a study titled “Interactions between Sleep Habits and Self-Control,” Clemson psychologists concluded a sleep-deprived individual is at increased risk for succumbing to impulsive desires, inattentiveness and questionable decision-making.

Seminar offered for those interested in home schooling
EASLEY — A free seminar for parents interested in homeschooling will take place in Easley later on Tuesday, July 21 at 7 p.m. Parents who are thinking about homeschooling, or parents who recently started to homeschool, are encouraged to attend.
The seminar will be held at Easley First Wesleyan Church located on 104 West 6th Avenue in Easley.
The church has a play area and a supervised nursery area will also be available if requested.

LIBERTY — Earl Franklin Fowler, 86, of 102 Norman Street, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Monday, June 29, 2015 at his home. Born in Liberty he was a son of the late Franklin Wilson and Mattie Hinton Fowler.
He retired from BASF and was a member of Calumet Baptist Church. His hobbies included fishing, camping, bird watching, and his Clemson Tiger Football Team.
Mr. Fowler served his country in the United States Navy.
Surviving are his wife, Margie Bryant Fowler of the home; four daughters, Brenda Mull
Clemson inducts three into Hall
CLEMSON — Retired Clemson University Extension agents Rowland Alston, Bill Craven and Bill Riser were inducted into the A. Frank Lever County Extension Agent Hall of Fame for their service to South Carolina residents and commitment to help improve the state’s economy.

PCSO stresses security awareness for local churches
PICKENS — In the wake of the recent deadly church shooting in Charleston, Pickens County Sheriff’s Office officials are reminding the public of an initiative launched in 2008 focused on providing safety and security awareness for local church.
Since 2008, the sheriff’s office has continued to provide the service to local clergy and their congregations in hopes that a proactive approach to the potential for crime and violence within sanctuaries will serve to deter an act of violence before it occurs.

EASLEY — The YMCA of Easley, Pickens and Powdersville announced that it received a $22,700 donation from Toyota of Easley.
“The YMCA of Easley, Pickens and Powdersville is honored to receive a $22,700 donation from Toyota of Easley,” said Tom Merritt, Capital Campaign Chairman of the Powdersville Y. “This generous grant will go to build an Aquatics Center at the Powdersville Y, creating a powerful magnet for connecting neighbors with one another.”
