offensively for the Liberty Red Devils, as they have yet to score a point during regulation play, including a 30-0 loss at the hands of county rival Pickens on Friday night.

The team’s only points came in overtime in the opener against Crescent on a 20-yard Dylan McCall field goal.

The Red Devils have struggled with consistency in moving the football. Six fumbles and one interception in two games have contributed to the offensive inconsistency.

Austin Hughey was forced into the starting quarterback role with the departure of two-year starter Tyler Burgess and a summer football injury to Nick Reeves, who had been the anticipated starter. Reeves should return sometime soon, but Liberty coach Kyle Stewart has announced no specific timetable. The learning curve for Hughey has been tough being thrust into varsity play for the first time.

Against the Blue Flame, the Red Devils had a total of 10 possessions in the game, and half of them resulted in turnovers.

They had four possessions that resulted in three-and-out drives and just one possession that was longer than three plays. The longest drive was 12 plays, and the Red Devils gained 46 yards on the possession. That was the only time the Red Devils crossed into Pickens territory. It is very difficult to score when you are playing on your own side of the field all night. The Red Devils would certainly love to see someone break a long one to shift field position and provide an opportunity to put points on the board.

The longest gain from scrimmage on the night for the Red Devils was a 19-yard run by Hughey that came late in the fourth quarter, but it also resulted in a turnover to give the ball back to the Blue Flame.

The Red Devils were also forced to start each possession deep in their own territory by the booming leg of Pickens kicker Matt Gravely. Liberty’s average starting field position was its own 21-yard line. Gravely accounted for five touchbacks on seven kickoff attempts on the evening.

The Red Devils managed only 89 total yards of offense on the evening, all coming on the ground. Eddy Mathis led the way for the Red Devils with 31 yards on 10 carries. Hughey was 0-for-4 through the air with one interception.

The Red Devil defense held the Blue Flame rushing attack in check for most of the evening, as the Blue Flame gained just 105 yards on the ground. Gunner Covey gained 69 yards on 15 carries to lead Pickens.

The spread formation Blue Flame coach John Boggs decided to go with against the Red Devils made the difference. Sophomore quarterback Tanner Stegall finished the game 12-for-20 on the night for 188 passing yards and one touchdown. He completed passes to six different receivers in the game. The Blue Flame had previously used the power run game in the first two games of the season in losses to Easley and Pendleton.

Stewart will continue to work his squad on fundamentals to develop the run game, using the clock to his advantage as the Devils head into a home matchup with Walhalla this Friday night. Liberty will also have to do a better job of holding onto the football in order to gain the consistency Stewart is seeking in order to nab the first win of the season.

There is an end zone on both ends of the field, and the Red Devils are determined to get there sooner than later.

Kickoff for Friday night’s game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

PICKENS — It was nearly the perfect storm for Pickens Friday night in a 30-0 home win over county rival Liberty.

The Blue Flame defense forced five turnovers, the offense didn’t turn it over once and the team and fans waited out a near two-hour weather delay to avenge last year’s defeat to the Red Devils.

It was the first win at Pickens for coach John Boggs.

“We threw the ball when we needed to throw it and we ran the ball well,” Boggs said. “Defensively, we get the shutout and I’m not sure of the yardage but I believe their biggest play was in the last series.

“I was very proud of our guys. There were a lot of distraction with the weather and everything else, but I thought they handled it well and came back and did a good job. I was proud of them for being resilient and bouncing back every week. We started out 0-2, and that’s not where we want to be, but the most important one is the next one, and that’s the one we got tonight. I was very proud of these guys.”

The two teams traded punts to open as the defenses came up big. Linebacker Clay Adcox had a four-yard tackle for loss for Pickens, and Aaron Bates had a sack for Liberty.

Pickens then marched 65 yards in 10 plays, mixing pass and run. Gunner Covey had an early 25-yard run, and a Tanner Stegall to Sam Lawson pass covered 11 to the 14. Four plays later, tailback Brandon Batson took a toss right and scored from two yards out with 4:06 left in the first quarter. Matt Gravely’s kick was good, making it 7-0.

Liberty reached the Red Devil 47 when the first lightning strike was spotted at 7:53 p.m. The game didn’t resume until 9:40. The stadium was emptied for safety, and the players went to the locker rooms.

“You don’t even want to know,” Boggs said, laughing about the long delay. “They were stacking cups. You know it’s 30 minutes and then another 30 minutes. You keep having to wait and wait. The biggest thing is you want to keep them off their feet and saving energy. The kids are already wired up and ready to play. (Liberty coach Kyle Stewart) and I were laughing about it.”

The Red Devils, continuing to keep the ball on the ground, reached the Blue Flame 27 after converting on fourth and three. But on first down, Matt Gravely made possibly the biggest play of the game as he made a leaping interception of quarterback Austin Hughey, who was being pressured by Tyler Gravely on the attempt.

As the Blue Flame would do on four of the five turnovers, Pickens converted the miscue into points. Adam Thomas gave Pickens a huge boost, first with a 23-yard catch and run, and then with an 11-yard carry. The drive stalled, and Matt Gravely hit a 38-yard field goal, making it 10-0 with 4:55 left in the half.

The Liberty gifts kept coming three plays later, when a handoff was fumbled and Corbin Hinkle recovered at the Red Devil 32.

A penalty forced Pickens into a second and long, but Stegall found Kirkland Gillespie over the middle and he threaded through four defenders en route to a 47-yard score. Gravely’s kick made it 17-0 with 3:14 left in the half.

“That was big because whenever you have (Gravely) on the field, you have a chance to get points,” Boggs said. “It’s nice to be able to score. I thought the offensive line for the most part did a good job tonight. Our receivers did a good job. Kirkland Gillespie made a nice catch in a backed-up situation. We didn’t get the ball to Isaiah (Ferguson) deep like we wanted to, but he made some big catches. It was a good overall win.”

The second half saw more Liberty presents for Pickens. Three plays into the second half, to Devils lost another fumble, this one recovered by Bryson Capps at the Liberty 29. Eight plays — all runs — later, Stegall snuck it in from a yard out, making it 24-0 with 6:50 left in the third quarter.

The next series was very frustrating for Liberty. The Red Devils were hit with a personal foul on first down, then had a back tackled for a five-yard loss by Ridge Clark and Jerrad Pace. Then, on third and long, Liberty lost another fumble, this one recovered by Renny Croley at the Red Devil 18.

The Devil defense held, and Gravely kicked a 30-yard field goal to make it 27-0 with 4:21 left in the third quarter.

Liberty was held to just 89 yards rushing and again found the going tough, as Croley, Covey and Tyler Gravely ganged up to tackle Cavaugio Butler for a four-yard loss on third down.

Pickens went 65 yards in nine plays for its final score. Stegall hit Ferguson for 15 and Covey for 22 before settling for a 20-yard Gravely kick with 8:23 left.

The Blue Flame got the ball back twice, but one ended on a sack by DeAndre Mansell. The other came in the final two minutes following another fumble, this one recovered by Will Reynolds after a hit by Jamal Blythe on Hughey on a scramble play. Reynolds was ejected following the play for a personal foul and will miss the next game.

Pickens will take this week off before traveling to Wren next Friday to begin region play. Liberty will play host to Walhalla this Friday night.

Tigers open season with runaway win

CLEMSON — The No. 12 Clemson Tigers improved to 7-0 in home openers

under head coach Dabo Swinney with a convincing 49-10 win over Wofford Saturday in front of a crowd of 81,301 fans at Memorial Stadium.

Clemson racked up 533 yards, with 222 on the ground and 311 through the air.

The Tigers came out quickly, with sophomore quarterback Deshaun Watson leading an 11-play, 75-yard drive culminating with a four-yard touchdown reception by Mike Williams. During the touchdown completion, Williams appeared to hit his head against the goalpost in the east endzone. Williams suffered a neck injury and was transferred to Oconee Medical Center for further medical attention. He showed up in the locker room after the game, much to the delight of his teammates.

Defensive coordinator Brent Venables’ unit was one of the best in the nation a year ago and, despite several starters now playing in the NFL, picked up right where it left off. Wofford did not pick up its first first down until late in the second quarter, as the Tiger defense posted six consecutive three-and-outs to start the season.

“Our guys in the secondary did a great job,” Swinney said. “I’m really proud of the defense. When you have as many young guys as we’ve got, you’re going to have a few first-game mistakes, but I am really proud.”

Offensively, Watson led touchdown drives on the first two possessions and Clemson scored on five of its first seven drives, building a 35-0 lead.

Following a miscue on a Clemson punt return, the Terriers put together a 10-play, 2:38 drive ending with a one-yard touchdown run by Chase Nelson as time expired in the first half.

After halftime, Wofford drove 55 yards on eight plays to set up a 37-yard field goal by David Marvin and cut the score to 35-10.

Sophomore Artavis Scott returned the ensuing kickoff 39 yards and Clemson punched in its sixth touchdown of the day with a Wayne Gallman one-yard plunge six plays later to take a commanding 42-10 lead early in the third quarter.

Watson finished the day 18-22 passing for 194 yards and two touchdowns, while Gallman led all rushers with 92 yards on 14 carries and two scores. First-year freshman Ray-Ray McCloud hauled in eight catches for 80 yards and Scott added six grabs for 75 yards and a score.

“I want to thank the fans,” Swinney said. “The environment we had today was incredible. I appreciate that support, and the energy was awesome.”

The Tigers will return to action Saturday at home, facing Appalachian State at 12:30 p.m. The game will be streamed live by ESPN3 and is officially sold out.

Local bull fighter Clay Constance will be in action when the Double B Arena Championship Rodeo kicks off this weekend.

DACUSVILLE — Are you ready for some heart-stopping rodeo action? If the answer is yes, then this weekend is the perfect time to get out and see the Double B Arena Championship Rodeo in Dacusville.

The event, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, will feature some great local talent and present seven championship rodeo events, including bull riding.

As dangerous as that sounds, what may be even be more precarious at the event will be the job that is done by the people who keep the riders safe after the bull throws them to the arena floor. They are known as the bull fighters.

These bull fighters are not like the typical Spanish matadors, but more like the traditional rodeo clowns of old — just without the jokes, according to Pickens-area bull fighter Clay Constance.

Constance, a 2003 graduate of Pickens High School, is proud of the work he and others like him do to save the cowboys from further harm once the bull ride is over.

Constance is not like most men. Most would run the other direction if a 2,000-pound snorting mass of muscle with long, sharp horns came charging toward them at full speed on four hooves.

It is just another day at the office for Constance and his buddy and mentor, Dusty Smith. Constance gives Smith the credit for getting him into the business of battling the behemoths.

According to the former Blue Flame, fighting the beasts is much like his gridiron days on Bruce Field under the tutelage of then-Pickens High football coach Andy Tweito.

“Dusty told me since I was pretty good at playing football that bull fighting was not much different,” Constance said. “(He told me) ‘You are going to go after them just like you would a running back that is breaking through the middle. You will take a beating, but you would be good at bouncing off of him.’

“He said it was the same. ‘You will take a beating to get the bull away from a fallen cowboy, but it is a thrill, and you should try it.’ So I did.”

Now it’s in his blood, Constance said.

“The way I played football was no different than how I look at that bull,” he said. “I see the bull just like a running back — neither one of them, the ball player nor the bull, is going to whip me. If he beats me this time, he dang sure ain’t gonna get me twice.”

Constance, who has been fighting the creatures for a little more than a year, said he does not do it for the money, he does it for the thrill and the ability to save the cowboys who are in harm’s way and helpless from being hooked by the horns of the beast they were just riding when they hit the dirt.

“It is not always the money part of it or anything about it,” he said. “If I take a beating for somebody and save them and they come back and say ‘thank you,’ that is more payment for me than anything. That means more to me than anything.

“It eats me up more to see somebody get hooked than anything. It breaks my heart to see someone taking a hooking from a bull when I could have taken it in their place.”

But Constance has not always fought; he was once a rider, like the people he now protects. He met his wife while riding and says she always knew he was a daredevil. The couple now has a 4-year-old son who is ready to help dad if he ever gets in a pinch.

“It really don’t bother my wife to watch me — the funnier thing is to watch my son,” Constance said. ” He is 4 years old, and he once came up to Ernie Treadway, the promoter, and said to him ‘if my daddy needs me to fight tonight, I will be in there with him’. He has always supported and loved it.”

Constance knows his gifts are God-given.

“The thing that I always think about when I get in there is what is written in the Bible,” he said. “It says, ‘Greater is the man that lays down his life for his friend,’ and I love knowing that I can help save people from getting hurt. God gave me that ability.”

Constance has never been seriously injured but understands that any given night the worst is possible in what he does.

“If wasn’t for the Lord I wouldn’t be doing what I am doing. The Bible says if you don’t use your talents in his glory, he will take them from you,” he said.

But the small stage is just the start for Constance and his partner and mentor Smith, as the duo have dreams of competing all over the United States.

“Dusty goes to the IFR Stock Show and Sale every year,” Constance said. “The sale is for the international finals for the International Pro Rodeo Association, and they have a cowboy protection finals out there, and they have cowboys from all over the world. We are going try to go to it this year and hopefully win it.

“At the shows, you will have stock traders come from all over the United States. As they are bucking the bulls, they are having their auction. A bull does not leave the arena until it is sold, and the whole time out there you have to play with him or fight him. That is how you are scored. Everybody is going to be watching you, and you could get a job from how good you perform. You could get called out to California for a few weeks or Texas or anywhere.”

Constance said he is going to be doing this as long as he can, adding, “I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon.”

Constance will be saving riders at the Double B Championship Rodeo this Friday and Saturday night and wants all of his friends and former classmates to come out and see the excitement.

“I want all my friends from school to come out and watch me. They need to come see it, because a lot of them told me I would never make it,” he said.

Constance wants to prove them wrong.

The rodeo will begin nightly at 8 p.m. Tickets are available in advance at Ivey’s Furniture in Pickens and Easley. Ticket prices are $12 for adults in advance or $15 at the gate. Kids ages 5 to 10 are $8 in advance or $10 the night of the rodeo. Kids under 5 get in free.

The Double B Arena Championship Rodeo will be held at the Double B Arena at 494 Hamburg Road in Dacusville, and is sponsored by Brown’s Feed and Seed, S. H. Carter, The Boot Barn, Blanchard’s and Farm Bureau Insurance. For more information, call Cory Brown at (864) 246-9426.

Officers say man molested child for 9 years

PICKENS — A Central man was arrested last week after police claim he molested a young girl numerous times over a nine-year period.

David Allen Marchbanks, 54, of 119A Eloise Drive in Central, was charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor. Marchbanks is being held without bond at the Pickens County Detention Center, according to officials.

Pickens County Sheriff’s Office chief deputy Creed Hashe said an investigation was launched on Aug. 18 about a child who had been molested on numerous occasions dating back to 2000.

According to Hashe, the investigation revealed Marchbanks allegedly molested the girl — who was 4 years old at the time the incidents began — at multiple homes in Pickens County between January 2000 and January 2009.

A warrant claims the incidents lasted until the girl was 12 years old.

Police investigate late-night shooting

Teen shot in Clemson fast-food restaurant parking lot

CLEMSON — Clemson police are asking the public for information after a teen was injured in an early-morning shooting at a popular fast-food restaurant on Sunday.

Chief Jimmy Dixon said the 16-year-old victim’s name won’t be released. However, Dixon said the victim’s gunshot wound was non-life-threatening.

Dixon said the incident occurred at approximately 2 a.m. as the victim and friends were leaving the Cook Out in Clemson. As they were leaving, shots were fired in the parking lot area of either the Cook Out or Hibachi Grill China Buffet next door.

The chief said one bullet entered the rear passenger door of the vehicle where the victim was sitting, striking the victim in the leg. The victim was taken to the hospital by a personal vehicle and later released.

Clemson police say they do not feel the shooting poses any threat to the city, and the victim is not affiliated with Clemson University. Dixon said late Monday afternoon there was no new information to report.

Anyone with information about the shooting is being asked by Clemson police to call CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
