Chamber celebrates community

The Greater Pickens Chamber of Commerce and Pickens Revitalization Association held their annual banquet on Saturday night at the Lighthouse Restaurant in Seneca. In addition to food, drinks and live music from the Jake Bartley Band, among the highlights of the event were the presentation of awards. In addition to Bee Well Honey earning the chamber business of the year honors and Pickens Fire Chief Chris Elrod winning the annual Duke Citizenship Award, other honorees included the kitchen staff at the Pickens Senior Center as the PRA volunteer of the year, Rustic Chic as the PRA’s best interior/exterior award, Bivens Hardware as the PRA community business award winner and Southern Appalachian Outdoors as the PRA’s outstanding new business of the year. 60 years of marriage

Waldon and Janie Entrekin celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with more than 100 guests at the Liberty House Inn in Liberty on Saturday, Feb. 25. 60 years ago the couple’s first apartment was in the house that is currently the Liberty House Inn, and they were married in their living room by their pastor, the late Rev. A.C. Harrison. They greeted their guests standing in the same location they stood for their marriage ceremony. Their daughter, Nancy McConnell, her husband, Charlie, and their daughter, Julie Beth McConnell, hosted the event. The Entrekins make their home in Liberty.

I can remember when making a coconut dessert required several people in the kitchen laboring with a hammer and spike to crack the thing while the grater was ready to be put into service.

We’re freed from all that now, because shredded coconut is readily available.
