Standoff ends in arrest
PICKENS — A man was arrested after a six-hour standoff with Pickens police on Sunday.
According to a release from Pickens Police Department chief Travis Riggs, officers were dispatched about 8:30 a.m. about a woman being held hostage by a man with a gun at a home on Pineview Drive.

Sheriff’s office: Captive woman sexually assaulted
LIBERTY — A Liberty man was arrested last week after police said he held a woman against her will and sexually assaulted her.
Pickens County Sheriff’s Office chief deputy Creed Hashe said Carl Benton Moore II, 26, of 104 Welby Way, is charged with kidnapping, first-degree criminal sexual conduct and first-degree domestic violence.
Moore was still being held at the Pickens County Detention Center on a combined $80,000 surety bond Tuesday afternoon.
Hashe said deputies learned about the incident after the victim was able to call a family member and use a pre-established code word indicating she was in danger.

Ceremony planned to break ground at trail park
PICKENS — The city of Pickens will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the Pickens Doodle Park on Friday, July 14.
Several grants have been awarded to aid in the revitalization efforts happening at the trailhead.

Graduations again planned at stadiums in 2018

PICKENS — High school graduations will be held at the four high school stadiums in Pickens County for the fourth year in a row in 2018.
School district superintendent Danny Merck announced recently that the times and locations will follow the same format as this year’s graduations, held last month. After consulting with principals and the director of the Pickens County Career and Technology Center, Merck said a 4-1 vote was taken in favor of keeping graduation at the high schools.
“Last year we had some issues with the heat, but moving the ceremonies to 8:30 a.m. seemed to take care of that this year,” Merck said.
Merck added that Daniel, Liberty, Pickens and Easley high schools held graduation ceremonies at Littlejohn Coliseum until 2014. The ceremonies were moved to the high schools during the period that Littlejohn Coliseum was renovated and have remained at the football stadiums ever since.

Fall volleyball, soccer signups now open
PICKENS — Fall soccer and volleyball signups are open now through July 21 at the Pickens Recreation Department.
For soccer, coed age divisions are 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-15.

Everything is meant to be eaten
Somewhere on Fowler Farm is a tally stick with five marks on it. I believe this because Boomer, our boxer pup, must be keeping up with the number of door mats he has destroyed.
And I mean completely destroyed. The first two were the woven rope mats. Once he discovered they were chewable, he began making inroads on the perimeters. Once he managed to detach one end, he busily set about unraveling the rope. It didn’t take long.
I came home to find the front porch covered with frayed bits of rope, scattered pretty evenly.
So I hopefully went to town to find something that would hold up to his attentions

Study: Mild exercise won’t do the trick
Some of us suspected it was too good to be true: that mild exercise of any type was good for us and helped us live longer. A new study shows that, unfortunately, we may be right.
