Fall volleyball, soccer signups open at Pickens Recreation
PICKENS — Fall soccer and volleyball signups are open now through July 21 at the Pickens Recreation Department.
For soccer, coed age divisions are 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-15.

ONS siren test set for next week
UPSTATE — The outdoor warning sirens around the Oconee Nuclear Station will be tested at approximately 11:50 a.m. on Wednesday, July 12.
The 65 sirens within 10 miles of the Oconee Nuclear Station will be tested for three minutes to assure each siren works properly. The full-cycle siren test is performed once each quarter in cooperation with emergency officials in Oconee and Pickens

Summertime on Grandmama’s back porch
It was summer, hot, humid and Gradmama wanted some peaches. Every summer as long as she was physically able, we canned peaches for the winter. She’d send Uncle Walter or Wesley Campbell up into the sand hills where the peach orchards were, and they’d come home with a bushel of ripe, not hard, peaches at their peak.

When life makes no sense

State of the VA
Department of Veterans Affairs chief David Shulkin gave a 100-days State of the VA address, and he was candid about the problems with the VA and the hopes of correcting what needs to be fixed.
What’s concerning is that there have been 137 different assessments and studies about what’s wrong at the VA. It seems that somewhere along the line, officials would have just grabbed one assessment and started to fix whatever it pointed out, instead of letting 137 of them stack up.

Why do we always say no?
Far too many of us say no to help when we’re discharged from the hospital or rehab, even though studies have shown that too often we end up even worse off when we refuse home health care. Why do we make these choices?
