Lions pick up road win to start season

MONCKS CORNER — The Daniel Lions traveled across the state of South Carolina on Friday night, a four-hour drive into the muggy August heat of the Lowcountry with the weight of the world on their shoulders.

Coming off a stunning 3-0 loss in their lone jamboree matchup against Walhalla, many tempered their expectations for the Lions this season. However, rather than play into conjecture, the Lions fought their way to a 17-10 season-opening win against the Berkeley Stags.

The first game of the season in any sport is always important in showing the tenacity of a team for the year to come. And if the first matchup is telling of the season to come, the Lions have a heck of a lot of grit in them, as a goal-line stand in the final seconds lifted Daniel past former Lion head coach Randy Robinson’s Stags.

“These kids came down here against adversity and they fought,” Fruster said after the game.

Neither offense could get much going in the early, as both squads managed just three first downs combined in the first quarter. The only real positive movement for either side came in the form of a 38-yard strike from Daniel quarterback Noah Lupton to Brysen
