On the road again
“Road trip!” — to some of us those words bring back lots of memories. To others, going on a road trip is still on the to-do list. If the idea is appealing, here are some thoughts to get you dreaming.
The first consideration is your vehicle. You can rent a comfy SUV with luxury seats and stereo, and then spend nights in motels. You won’t be putting the mileage on your own vehicle, and if the SUV breaks down, a replacement is only a phone call away. Complaint hotline to be staffed by vets
As promised, we have a new complaint hotline — the White House VA Hotline. Best of all, it’s staffed by veterans.
The hotline started up in June with an estimated full 24/7 availability in August, but now the full-time schedule has been pushed back until Oct. 15. Until then, the hotline hours are from 8 a.m to 5 p.m. EDT. (Remember that this is not a crisis line. If you have a crisis, call 1-800-273-8255 and press 1.)

SWU graduate tackles tech’s dark side
CENTRAL — An inescapable fact of today’s connected world is that there’s a dark side of technology and the victims are real.
Southern Wesleyan University graduate Harold Reaves’ work is devoted to raising awareness of the pitfalls and at the same time promote “digital citizenship” by teaching students how to be positive role models to their peers.
Currently serving as Global Director for Safe Schools at Absolute, a technology company, Reaves works with students, parents, school administrators, counselors, school resource officers, law enforcement professionals and church leaders to educate them about the dangers children and youth encounter when going online.

Honoring their service
Mount Bethel United Methodist Church in Sunset set aside the month of July to honor the church’s men and women who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Each Sunday during the church’s worship service, a patriotic song was sung. The church also collected shirts to be sent to the “Hawaiian Shirts for Deployed Soldiers” project. On the last Sunday of July, the church had two veterans, Bobby Carver and Carl Porter, wear Hawaiian shirts as a Pastor Dick Waldrop prayed for the soldiers who would receive the collected shirts. In all, the church gathered 24 shirts and also some money for postage.

The Pickens High School class of 1972 is planning a 45-year reunion. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 4-8 p.m. at Looper’s Barn, located at 101 Laurenwood Drive in Pickens.

The Pickens High Class of 1950 held its 67th class reunion on Saturday at the Gatehouse Restaurant in Pickens. The group enjoyed fellowship and a great meal. Reserve launches new neighborhood
SUNSET — The Reserve at Lake Keowee recently began a reservation program for Phase I homesites in its Settlement Village neighborhood. The program is now open to the public.

Julian turns 90
Christine Nix Julian of Easley celebrated her 90th birthday at Mountain Grove Baptist Church with a party hosted by her children. She was born on Aug. 4, 1927, the oldest of the eight children of John and Mary Nix. She married Cecil Julian on Aug. 15, 1949. The couple had two children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She received her bachelor’s degree from Furman and her master’s degree from Clemson. She taught school in Washington state, Florence and several schools in Pickens County. All her relatives and friends wish her many more happy birthdays.
Gilstrap family reunion Sept. 9 at Antioch BC
SUNSET — The Gilstrap family reunion will be held Sept. 9 at the Antioch Baptist Church fellowship building on Highway 11.
All attending are asked to bring a well-filled basket. Plates and cups will be provided. Lunch will be at noon.
APCSP offers rain barrels through local program
Clemson — The Anderson and Pickens Counties Stormwater Partners recently announced ivy rain barrels are being offered again this year.
The rain barrels are offered at a discounted price to encourage residents to conserve precious water resources, as well as to protect water quality.
