Pickens comes up just short against Bulldogs

PICKENS — Football is said to be a game of inches, and Friday night, the Pickens Blue Flame learned the hard way just how true that adage is.

Coming up mere inches short of the goal line, Blue Flame wideout Nate Thomas was knocked out of bounds by a horde of Bulldog defenders as time expired, sealing a 20-13 Pendleton victory.

The Pickens coaches and players seemed to think that Thomas was pushed out of bounds prior to the clock expiring. However, without the benefit of instant replay to aid their cause, the Blue Flame ended their home opener in heart-wrenching fashion. But the sickening ending certainly did not detract from Pickens head coach Chad Smith’s glowing reviews of his squad after the game.

“Our kids played their hearts out tonight,” Smith said. “I could not be more proud of my football team.”

Red Devils roll to big win over Razorbacks

LIBERTY — The Liberty Red Devils jumped out to a 20-0 lead over mistake-prone Walhalla and gained their first win of the season going away in a 45-17 game Friday night.

Walhalla turned the ball over on its first two offensive plays of the game, and they were also stopped short of midfield on a fake punt to make for a miserable first quarter for the Razorbacks. The Red Devils converted to score on two of the miscues to jump out to the early lead.

On the first offensive play of the game, Kevon Tabron picked off a Chris Meadors pass at the Walhalla 35-yard line and rambled down to the 1-yard line before being knocked out of bounds by Meadors.

Tabron scored on the following play, and the Red Devils were up 7-0 with just 25 seconds elapsed in the first quarter.

Easley takes care of business against Lions

EASLEY — This time, there would be no comeback or crazy ending.

But Easley fans had to at least be thinking about the last two seasons with the Green Wave leading 17-12 midway through the fourth quarter and the Daniel Lions driving for another possible comeback win.

Senior defensive end Quentin Phillips flew in from the blindside with a jarring sack of Daniel quarterback Dallas Odom, dislodging the ball. Senior Craig Barksdale scooped up the fumble and returned it to the 3-yard line as Easley pulled away to a 31-12 win Friday night.

Last season, Daniel, after a lengthy weather delay, rallied from a 28-10 deficit to win 29-28. Two years ago, Daniel won in the infamous free kick game. Those facts were not lost on Easley players or coaches.

Miscues doom Daniel against Green Wave

By Bru Nimmons

EASLEY — The Daniel Lions entered Friday’s game against county rival Easley riding the high of their season-opening victory over Berkeley and former Lions coach Randy Robinson.

Taking on the Green Wave, who were also 1-0 after defeating Pickens in Week 0, presented the Lions with a chance to stake their claim to being the top team in the county with a victory.

However, the Lions were setback by a number of miscues and a stout Easley defense in a 31-12 loss that dropped the Lions to 1-1 on the season.

The turnover battle is the most crucial struggle in the game of football. The team that wins the turnover battle often wins the game, and that proved to be the case Friday night as the Lions lost the turnover battle in a big way.

“You try not to put too much stock into one game, but when you lose the turnover margin 5
