Midnight madness

With last Friday as the first day high schools could begin football practice for the 2017 season in South Carolina, first-year Pickens head coach Chad Smith didn’t take long to put his players through the paces, as the Blue Flame began their preseason practice schedule with a “midnight madness” practice that began at 12:01 a.m. Pickens and the other three county high schools will officially kick off the season in Week 0 on Aug. 18.

 

Former elementary school set to get new lease on life

PICKENS — A.R. Lewis Elementary School served generations of young students before its closure.

Though no longer an elementary school, the facility, now known as A.R. Lewis Opportunity School, will continue to serve the community, helping students return to the classroom.

“There’s a lot of good things that have gone on under this roof for years — and a lot of good things are going to continue to go on here,” school board chairman Phillip Bowers said

PHS alumni volleyball match set for Friday

PICKENS — The annual Pickens High School alumni volleyball match is planned for this week.

All former PHS players are encouraged to put on their spandex, lace up their shoes and show up to scrimmage the 2017 Lady Blue Flame.

Those who can’t play are also urged to attend to show support for Pickens and new coach Rikki Owens.

Admission is free for the scrimmage, which will run from 6-8 p.m. Friday.

 

Grief support group begins in Central

CENTRAL — An eight-week grief support group for adults will meet at 6 p.m. on Mondays starting Aug. 7 for eight weeks at the Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home in Central.
