Lions pick up road win to start season

MONCKS CORNER — The Daniel Lions traveled across the state of South Carolina on Friday night, a four-hour drive into the muggy August heat of the Lowcountry with the weight of the world on their shoulders.
Coming off a stunning 3-0 loss in their lone jamboree matchup against Walhalla, many tempered their expectations for the Lions this season. However, rather than play into conjecture, the Lions fought their way to a 17-10 season-opening win against the Berkeley Stags.
The first game of the season in any sport is always important in showing the tenacity of a team for the year to come. And if the first matchup is telling of the season to come, the Lions have a heck of a lot of grit in them, as a goal-line stand in the final seconds lifted Daniel past former Lion head coach Randy Robinson’s Stags.
“These kids came down here against adversity and they fought,” Fruster said after the game.
Neither offense could get much going in the early, as both squads managed just three first downs combined in the first quarter. The only real positive movement for either side came in the form of a 38-yard strike from Daniel quarterback Noah Lupton to Brysen

Sheriff asks for SLED investigation
Man died after being placed in handcuffs in May
COUNTY — The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office has asked for state authorities to investigate after an Easley man died in sheriff’s office custody in May.
According to a news release from chief deputy Creed Hashe, sheriff Rick Clark received documentation from Pickens County coroner Kandy Kelley’s office Monday afternoon about the death of 42-year-old Randall Dale Scruggs, who died on May 28.
Kelley ruled Scruggs died of “asphyxia from aspiration of hemorrhagic gastric contents from thoracic/abdominal compression while in law enforcement custody,” according to her report on the death. The report lists “homicide” as the type of accident that killed Scruggs.
Because of his agency’s involvement, Clark made an official request to the

COUNTY — As viewers look to the skies during Monday’s total solar eclipse, they should take steps to not do long-lasting damage to their eyes.
According to Prevent Blindness, “eclipse blindness” or retinal burns, also known as solar retinopathy, can result from exposing your eyes to the sun without proper protection during a solar eclipse. Unprotected exposure can cause damage or even destroy retinal cells that transmit what you see to your brain. Solar retinopathy occurs with no pain
