Rival Seneca blanks Lions in home opener

CENTRAL — The Daniel Lions entered Friday’s game against heated rival Seneca at a crossroads.
The Bobcats were eager for revenge after a 27-0 shutout at Daniel’s hands the previous season. And the Lions, 1-1 after splitting games against Berkeley and Easley, were a team with no certain direction in the season to come.
Though the Lions gave a valiant defensive effort, they just couldn’t muster the points in a 13-0 shutout loss to the Bobcats on Hall of Fame night at Singleton Field.
“I’m awful proud of the defense,” Lions head coach Jeff Fruster said after the loss. “But Daniel High School is never going to be successful if we’re only good on one side of the ball. We have to fix our offensive problems, that’s for certain.”
The offensive struggles doomed the Lions in a game that stayed tight most of the night. The Lions managed just 5 yards rushing after the first quarter, and the Daniel quarterback duo

Wave struggle in trip to Belton-Honea Path

HONEA PATH — The New England Patriots would have had a hard time Friday night against Belton-Honea Path as the Bears dedicated their field to longtime manager Marlee Gambrell, who passed away last November after 50 years of service to the school
Gambrell had a saying of “How bad, real bad!” It was that kind of night for Easley, as BHP held the Green Wave to just four first downs in a 43-14 win.
Knowing that it was going to be an emotional night on the BHP sidelines, Easley needed a good start. It didn’t happen.
How bad was it for Easley? It was real bad in several areas. The offense only had two first downs in the first half — one by penalty.
The offense was not the only issue. Special teams issues hurt the Green Wave several times, as a long punt return set up the Bears’ first score. Two punts rolled deep in Easley territory, setting up a safety and then a 14-point flurry in the final minute of the first half as BHP took command 36-7.

Devils persevere for win over Blue Flame

PICKENS — For most of the game, Liberty coach Kyle Stewart had to wonder what his team would have to do to overcome itself and find a way to earn a victory over county rival Pickens.
In the end, perseverance was the answer, as the Red Devils ground out a 21-7 win on Friday night to improve 2-1 on the young season. Pickens fell to 0-3 under first-year coach Chad Smith.
The Red Devils were their own nemesis for much of the first three quarters. Neither team moved the ball with much success the first quarter of action. The Red Devils began a good drive midway through the second quarter and were close to the Blue Flame red zone following a 16-yard Cavaugio Butler run to the Pickens 22-yard line.
But a holding call behind the line of scrimmage resulted in a 15-yard penalty that pushed the Devils back into their own territory at the 47-yard line. An errant snap continued to move the drive backward, and the Red Devil drive was halted and they were forced to punt.
A low snap ensued, and an Austin Kemp punt was blocked by Griffin

Costly fumbles, fourth quarter doom Pickens

PICKENS — Plagued by costly injuries and even costlier turnovers, the Pickens Blue Flame fell to 0-3 on the season with a 21-7 defeat at the hands of county rival Liberty on Friday.
Two touchdowns given up after turnovers proved to be the coup de grace for the Blue Flame in a game that was highlighted by its physical play and continual momentum swings.
“It was a very physical game,” Pickens head coach Chad Smith said after the game. “Liberty is a good football team. We had some key injuries early on, but I don’t want to take anything away from Liberty. (The Red Devils) did a great job.”
Despite the occasional big play, Pickens struggled to settle into a rhythm on offense, accruing just 99 total yards to Liberty’s 297. Not helping matters for the Blue Flame was the absence of a passing game.
Although Smith’s offense revolves around a tough running game, the Blue Flame lacked an aerial attack at all on Friday night, with starting

Bryant, Tiger offense shine in opening win

CLEMSON — The Clemson Tigers haven’t skipped a beat.
No. 5 Clemson opened its 2017 season with a 56-3 thrashing of Kent State Saturday afternoon in Memorial Stadium.
Kelly Bryant made his debut as the Tigers’ new starting quarterback and didn’t waste any time helping the Clemson offense make a good first impression. The Tigers used a four-play opening drive that took 1:18 to get on the board, capped off by a 26-yard touchdown run by former Easley High School standout C.J. Fuller.
Clemson’s second drive was even shorter — 42 seconds — as Bryant dropped in a perfect pass to Deon Cain for a 61-yard touchdown.
The rout was on from there.
“That was good, getting to come out there first, getting the confidence, get it under our belt,” Bryant said after the win. “Also, hitting the big play to Deon — he made a play, that’s what he does, and that’s what we’ve got in that offensive room.”
Bryant played into the third quarter and completed 16 of his 22 pass attempts for 236 yards, one touchdown and

one interception. He added one rushing touchdown and 77 yards on seven carries. Bryant’s 313 yards of total offense were a Clemson record for a season opener, eclipsing Tajh Boyd’s 312 in 2013.
The offense racked up 665 total yards, averaging 8.5 per play.
“There was really no drop-off from the first group to the second group — everybody all game was playing comfortable and fast,” Cain said of the offense. “At the end of the day, I was proud of everyone, and we just kept the momentum going throughout the whole game.”
Fuller ran for 51 yards and two scores, and Adam Choice and Tavien Feaster each found the end zone as well, but freshman Travis Etienne led the Tigers in rushing with 81 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Clemson lived up to its preseason hype. The Tigers allowed just 120 total yards to the Golden Flashes while allowing just 1 passing yard on five attempts.
Tanner Muse, Kendall Joseph and Chad Smith led the way with six tackles each.
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said all throughout fall camp that many people outside the program were spending a lot of time talking about the players who had moved on and not about the players who were stepping into those roles this season.
On Saturday, those new players impressed in the time they spent on the field, but Swinney already knew what those players, like Bryant, were capable of.
“If he’ll just play anywhere remotely close to what he’s done in camp, he’s gonna be pretty good,” Swinney said of Bryant. “He’s put in a ton of work — great to see him so poised and confident. He’s really become a good leader for us.”
At the end of the day, Clemson did what it was expected to do and won the opener in lopsided fashion. The offense struck quick and often, and the defense smothered Kent State, which were positive signs considering the new starters that the Tigers debuted. But Swinney and the Tigers know they have a long, grueling season ahead of them, with Auburn coming to town this Saturday.
And as Swinney said, the season-opening win was a good start, but there’s still a lot of work to be done.
“It’s one game — they’re not gonna anoint us the one-game champions of the season,” Swinney said. “We’ve got a long way to go (and) we’ve got a lot of work to do. We’ll play teams where there won’t be near as much margin for error. But, at the end of the day, you’ve got to take care of business of the task at hand, and that’s what they did today.”
