Defense shines as Tigers topple Auburn

CLEMSON — One of the oldest clichés in sports suggests that defense wins championships.
If that’s the case, the 2017 Clemson Tigers should feel pretty good about defending theirs.
Brent Venables’ bruise crew punished Auburn from wire to wire — finishing with 11 sacks — and the Clemson offense had just enough punch to deliver the knockout blow in a 14-6 win on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
“Welcome to 1988,” joked Clemson coach Dabo Swinney. “That’s what it felt like tonight. It’s been a long time since we’ve punted the ball that many times and played that conservative, but man, that was a great defensive game. Just dominant football defensively.”

Flame rushing attack burns past West-Oak

WESTMINSTER — The Pickens Blue Flame collected their first win in 
rather grand fashion, outgaining the West-Oak Warriors by more than 300 yards en route to a dominant 48-13 win on the road in Westminster on Friday night.
Propelled by a breakout 214-yard performance on the ground from wing player Nate Thomas, the Blue Flame controlled the contest from start to finish, utilizing their rushing attack to earn an impressive victory — the first under first-year Blue Flame head coach Chad Smith.
“That’s what we try to do every week,” Smith said, speaking on his team’s 462-yard rushing output. “Our kids ran hard tonight, and I was proud of them.”

Jackets pull away to hand Daniel third loss

CENTRAL — The Daniel Lions faced their toughest challenge of the season thus far on Friday night, as the Greer Yellow Jackets visited Singleton Field.
The Yellow Jackets, 2-1 with the lone loss coming at the hands of S.C. powerhouse Byrnes, entered the game considered to be among the best teams in Class 4A, and many expected them to make quick work of the Lions.
However, Daniel refused to roll over for the Jackets, putting up a heck of a fight in spite of inconsistent efforts on both sides of the ball in a 42-23 defeat.
“There is no such thing as a moral victory, but we put some points on the board,” Daniel coach Jeff Fruster said after the game. “There are some real postives happening, and once we get everything down pat, I think we’re going to be dangerous.”

Wave fall against rival Wren in heartbreaker

PIEDMONT — Wren quarterback Tyrell Jackson broke the hearts of Easley players and fans Friday night, scoring from a yard out with 10.1 seconds left 
to give the Hurricanes a 29-26 rivalry win Friday night.
The score snapped the Green Wave’s two-game win streak in the series.
“It was a great high school game,” Easley coach John Windham said. “I thought our guys played with a lot of guts. We played a lot of people and had some young players in there at the end. It was a tough loss, but give them credit. That’s a tough one.”
Easley got the ball first, and with starting quarterback Weston Black out “10-14 days” with a knee injury, the Green Wave moved junior Isaiah Ferguson in from receiver. The immediate results were electric, as Ferguson, running the option with tailback Cavario Cureton, covered 86 yards in 12 plays. Red Devils pick up big road win at Blue Ridge

GREER — The Liberty Red Devils traveled away from home for the second consecutive week on Friday night, this time taking on the Tigers of Blue 
Ridge, and came away with a convincing 35-8 win to improve to 3-1 on the season.
After losing their opening game against Pendleton, the Red Devils are now
on a three-game winning streak.
The Red Devils were a more efficient team this week against the Class 4A Tigers as they jumped out to a 16-0 halftime lead and then cruised in the second half, extending their lead to 29-0 before Blue Ridge got on the scoreboard thanks to a 72-yard interception return by D.J. Willis. He was in the right place at the right time as Liberty quarterback Parker Burgess was hit as he released the pass. The errant pass gently hung in the air not more than 5 yards from Burgess, and Willis was there to snag it out of the air and race the other direction for the score.
The night belonged to the Liberty defense, which shut out the Blue Ridge
