Crosswell Fire Station named to honor Duncan

EASLEY — The fire station in the Crosswell community will soon bear a new name, in honor of a man who dedicated his life to service.

Pickens County Council unanimously approved renaming the station after the late Alvin Lee Duncan.

The station will now be known as the “Alvin Lee Duncan Firehouse.”

Venture Outdoors Day set for Sept. 30

Holy Cross plans RCIA sessions

PICKENS — Holy Cross Catholic Church has begun RCIA sessions for instructions and growth in Christ.

Those who have ever wondered what the Catholic Church teaches and why are invited to join for questions and discussion.

Ralph Zeigler Boroughs

PICKENS — Ralph “Zig” Zeigler Boroughs, of Pickens, passed away Friday Sept. 15, 2017, at Cannon Memorial Hospital, with his wife Mary Jennings Boroughs (nee Dougherty) at his side.

He was born June 22, 1923, the son of Ralph Waldo Boroughs of Pickens and Zoe Boroughs (nee Zeigler) of Orangeburg County.

Zig was raised in Pickens. He attended Columbia Bible College and the Citadel. In WWII, he served with the U.S. Army’s 508th Paratrooper Regiment, 82nd Airborne, in Operation Market Garden and the Battle of the Bulge.

After the war, he served as a public school teacher and administrator in upstate South Carolina, a Baptist minister in upstate New York and a professor at Lander University.

He earned an A.B. from Furman University, a B.D. from New Orleans Theological Seminary, a M.Ed. from Clemson University and a doctorate from the University of Georgia.

Andrew Pickens, the Pickens County Historical Society placed a magnolia wreath at his statue in the military garden at the Pickens County Courthouse recently. Sept. 13 was the 278th anniversary of his birth.
