BLACKSBURG, Va. — Capped off by fourth-quarter interceptions by Dorian O’Daniel and Austin Bryant, the No. 2 Clemson Tigers defeated the No. 12 Virginia Tech Hokies 31-17 at Lane Stadium on Saturday night.

With the win, Clemson remained undefeated at 5-0 on the year and 3-0 in the ACC, while Virginia Tech dropped to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

The win also made Clemson the first team in the history of the Associated Press poll to beat three top-15 teams in September. Auburn and Louisville were also ranked in the top 15 when they lost to the Tigers last month.

Offensively, the Tigers were led against Virginia Tech by Kelly Bryant, who threw for 186 yards and a touchdown on 12 completions. Bryant also rushed for 94 yards on 19 carries. O’Daniel piloted the Tiger defense, recovering a Hokie fumble, returning an interception 22 yards for his second pick-six of the season and amassing 10 tackles, including one of the Tigers’ two sacks.

Clemson struck first, holding Virginia Tech to a three-and-out on its first drive before taking a 3-0 lead on a 23-yard Alex Spence field goal just more than five minutes into the first quarter. After the Tiger defense forced another three-and-out on the ensuing Hokie drive, Clemson took a 10-0 lead on a 60-yard Tavien Feaster touchdown reception, the running back’s first career receiving score.

The Hokies put their first points on the board with three minutes left in the second quarter on a 43-yard Joey

Red Raiders start hot to beat Pickens

PICKENS — It was a tale of two halves on Friday night as the Greenville Red Raiders blew past Pickens in the two teams’ Region I-4A opener, 42-14.

Giving up 35 points in the first half, the Blue Flame were essentially done in by two costly turnovers and spotty secondary play early in the game. Despite having possession of the football for nearly 16 minutes in the second half and stringing together multiple quality drives, Pickens, with its time-consuming, run-oriented offense, was unable to mount a serious comeback.

While the final score was certainly indicative of a blowout, the contest did not exactly play out like one, as Pickens put together several solid drives and limited Greenville on the defensive side of the ball throughout the second half. Gaining 274 yards of total offense, the Blue Flame were led by a two-headed rushing attack of fullback Bryson Capps and wingback Jarod Barton, who ran for 58 and 67 yards rushing, respectively.

“Honestly, I think that we got better,” Pickens head coach Chad Smith said after the game. “I hate losing, but I’m unbelievably proud of our kids. We hung in there, and we dominated the second half. And if we can do that against (Greenville), we can do that against anybody. We just have to get out of our own way.”

Haunted by turnovers, an unfortunate theme of Pickens’ season thus far, the Blue Flame coughed up two fumbles in the first half, leading directly to 14 points for the Red Raiders. In fact, four of Greenville’s six touchdowns on the night followed Blue Flame

Devils looking to finish strong after bye week

By Jimmy Kirby

LIBERTY — With a week off to prepare for the final four games of the 2017 regular season, Liberty coach Kyle Stewart has his team primed to finish the season strong and get ready for the playoffs.

Standing at 4-2 just past the halfway mark of the season, the Red Devils do indeed appear ready to make a run to the playoffs. With only two blemishes on their record — a 24-12 season-opening loss to Pendleton and a 27-20 loss to Powdersville on Sept. 15 — the Red Devils have plenty of confidence as they prepare to take on Crescent in the last non-region game of the season this Friday.

Taking a look at how the Red Devils got to where they are at gives Red Devil fans a chance to see that defense is the leading indicator for where their success lies. After six games, the Liberty defense is only giving up 13.8 points per game. The Red Devils have given up less than double-digit points in three games, including a 44-0 shutout against West-Oak in their last game out. In wins on the road against Pickens and Blue Ridge, the Red Devils only gave up seven and eight points, respectively.

The Liberty defense is only allowing 127.3 yards per game on the ground and 95.7 through the air for a total of 222.5 yards per game.

Coming into the season, Stewart was looking to see who would step up as leaders on the defensive to replace Aaron Bates. It appears that Jack Brissey and Gatlin Bell have teamed up to lead the way for

Jackets dominate in victory over Easley

ANDERSON — Third-ranked T.L. Hanna proved worthy of its ranking Friday night with a 52-0 homecoming win over Easley at Jim Fraser Field.

And the Yellow Jackets may be going up in the rankings after the win, as Spartanburg knocked off second-ranked Byrnes.

The Yellow Jackets were dominant in all phases — offense, defense and special teams.

The Green Wave won the turnover battle 2-1 and also won the opening coin toss, but deferred to the second half. By then, it was all over but the final.

“They were really good — really good,” Easley coach John Windham said. “We gave them some really short fields. They’re good all the way across the board from their kicking game to their lines, to their running backs. They don’t have any deficiencies.”

Defensively, Hanna had seven tackles for loss in the first half and held Easley to just five first downs for the game, including just three in the opening two quarters, as the injury-plagued Green Wave struggled on offense again, getting shut out for a second consecutive week. And to think, Alabama verbal commit Stephon Wynn Jr., a former Hanna defensive end, transferred to IMG Academy in Florida for his senior season.

Special teams for Easley were not so special in the game. The Green Wave punting unit was on the field for four major negative plays. A 50-yard return

Daniel comes up short against Wren

CENTRAL — The Daniel Lions returned to Singleton Field fresh off a bye week and looking to turn around a disappointing season on Friday night.

The Lions entered the region opener against Wren at Singleton Field with a 1-4 record, but a win would give them a leg up in region play.

However, a number of costly penalties and turnovers stalled the Lions’ effort in a 35-14 loss to the Hurricanes.

“Turnovers are a problem,” Daniel coach Jeff Fruster said following the loss. “Those turnovers turned the tide and changed the momentum of the game in their favor.

“In spite of them, we still have to stay aggressive and still have to get some points on the board. We just have to do a better job of being smart with our decision making and do a better job of knowing where to attack.”

The Lions were also dealt a massive blow as quarterback Tyler Venables went down at the end of the first half. Venables, who played admirably after taking over the starting duties under center over the Lions’ previous two games, kept the game close with his dual-threat ability.

Noah Lupton came in to replace Venables and produced mixed results, as a long touchdown pass to Drew Swinney was dampened by three interceptions.

“Tyler’s injury certainly changed the mode of attack, but it didn’t change the way we called the game,” Fruster
