SIX MILE — Although details are scant, Six Mile officials believe their goal of connecting residents with fresh groceries is nearing fruition.

“We’ve been trying for a couple of years to get a small grocery here in town,” Six Mile mayor Roy Stoddard said.

As part of those efforts, officials contacted the Aldi grocery chain, drafting a letter and sending it to company officials. They received no response from the company.

But recently, Stoddard said he heard that Aldi would build a location on S.C. Highway 183, near Durham’s Convenience Mart. Stoddard asked councilman James Atkinson to announce the news at the August town council meeting,

water on site while showcasing environmentally friendly practices that enhance the park facility.

“The city council and city staff are working tirelessly to ensure that the Pickens Doodle Park is one of a kind — one that can accommodate all needs,” mayor David Owens said in a news release. “It is grants like these that help to make our ideas and dreams a reality.”

A rain garden is a storm water feature which uses plants to allow rain water to soak back into the ground. City officials want to provide a hands-on learning experience for the children and families who visit the Pickens Doodle Park, therefore the sensory rain garden will include elements that will enhance the five senses. The garden will be home to plants that a person can touch, taste, or smell; a sensory pathway made of wood, stone, etc. to experience different textures under their feet; outdoor musical wind chimes for their hearing pleasure; outdoor play elements; and educational signage marking the different plants and how to interact with them.

“We value partnerships like this that show our communities the importance of environmental stewardship while creating hands-on exhibits to enhance those lessons,” Duke Energy government and community relations manager Emily DeRoberts said.

The city of Pickens has been able to leverage several different state, federal and private grants to create the Pickens Doodle Park. With the help of the South Carolina Recreational Trails Program Grant, South Carolina Department of Commerce Community Development Block Grant Program Grant, Appalachian Regional Commission Grant, EPA Brownfield Cleanup Grant, Pickens County Accommodations Tax Grant and the Duke Energy Foundation Grant the park is set to open in May 2018.

“There are many issues and opportunities the city will face in the next four years, including aging water and sewer infrastructure, attracting new businesses and jobs, just to name a few. Most importantly, we need to strengthen our community foundation with total transparency and open lines of communication with our citizens.”

The incident with the folding chair

Several years ago, Fowler gave me a gravity chair for Mother’s Day. It’ been a pleasure to use, as it really does relieve pressure on the lower back. I’ve tried to take good care of it. That means keeping the dogs off the chair as much as possible. For some obscure reason, they think it’s an ideal place to stretch out on.

Our boxer and boxer mix, Boomer and Little Red Dog, unfortunately, can’t lie down in the chair together. They’re just too big, but they still try to do so. This leads to less than restful chair time.

If I’m lying in it, the Chihuahua, Toby One Ka Doggy, insists on lying on top of me. From this perch, he can threaten Boomer and Little Red Dog.

That also isn’t restful.

Earlier this week, on a perfectly beautiful day when Boomer and Little Red Dog were occupied
