CENTRAL — Friday Night’s matchup with the Pickens Blue Flame was do or die for the Daniel Lions.

The Lions, 1-8 on the season, needed a victory over the Flame to continue an impressive playoff streak of 22 consecutive years. The Lions were able to add another year to the streak by stifling the Pickens run game in a 24-7 victory on senior night.

“I’m very proud of the seniors’ efforts tonight to finally get one back in the win column,” Daniel coach Jeff Fruster said after the game. “Wins are hard to come by, and we’re going to enjoy them whenever we can get them.”

The Daniel defense was particularly spectacular, holding the Flame to just 46 yards of offense and allowing just 6 yards after halftime. Jake Venables and Palmer Story stuffed the Pickens run game all night, with both recording five tackles for loss.

“It takes a lot to stifle that wing-T that they run,” Fruster said. “Hats off to my defense tonight

EASLEY — Playing perhaps their best overall game of the season, the Easley Green Wave clinched third place in Region I-5A Friday night with a 55-7 senior night win over J.L. Mann.

The Mann offense acted like Oprah Winfrey and treated the Green Wave defense to numerous gifts: “You get a turnover! And You get a turnover! Everybody gets a turnover!” The Patriots turned it over seven times, including four times in the first half.

“It was good to get that many turnovers,” Easley coach John Windham said. “They were having a little trouble with some of their snaps early on and we got some turnovers, which was good. It was a good win, no doubt. I was glad the seniors got to go out and have some fun tonight.”

In addition to the turnovers, it was a big night for some Easley seniors.

Three plays into the first Patriot series, Easley senior defensive tackle Matt Cronin, following a high snap, pushed quarterback Rico Mattison away and fell on the

Southside Christian blasts Red Devils

GREENVILLE — Liberty traveled to Greenville to take on Southside Christian in the teams’ regular-season finale on Friday night, and the Sabres aired it out en route to a convincing 40-0 win over the Red Devils.

With the loss, the Red Devils dropped to .500 and finished the regular season 5-5, including a winless mark in region play, going 0-3 against Abbeville, Ninety Six and Southside Christian.

The Liberty offense struggled all night against a stingy Southside Christian defense on Friday. The Devils were limited to a season-low 105 yards rushing on the night. They had 44 rushing attempts and averaged a paltry 2.4 yards per carry.

It was not until the last play of the game that the Red Devils cracked the 100-yard mark on the ground in the game. Cavaugio Butler gained 7 yards as Liberty was able to get a play off just as the clock expired.

Butler and Kevon Tabron were shut down by the Sabre defense. They gained 35 and 28 yards, respectively, on a

Flame’s season ends with loss at Daniel

By Cole Little

CENTRAL — With a playoff appearance on the line, what was essentially a play-in game between county foes the Pickens Blue Flame and the Daniel Lions played out in favor of the Lions.

Entering the Lions’ den of Singleton Field in Central, the Blue Flame had the opportunity to earn a trip to the playoffs, but were unable to do so, getting shut out in the second half as part of a 24-7 defeat.

“We fought hard, but we ran out of gas,” Pickens coach Chad Smith said. “Give Daniel all of the credit in the world. They came ready to play.”

Compiling just 46 yards of offense on the night, Pickens was unable to settle into an offensive rhythm, with a 12-yard run by fullback Bryson Capps serving as the Blue Flame’s longest play of the night. Daniel, on the other hand, was rather effective when in possession, totaling 228 yards with the football.

The Pickens defense played well at the start, though, holding Daniel to a field goal inside the

CLEMSON — After getting some much-needed time to rest the ankle he injured three weeks earlier, Clemson quarterback Kelly Bryant returned to his early-season form Saturday night against Georgia Tech.

And with their quarterback healthy — and their defense turning in a stellar performance to boot — the No. 7 Tigers found themselves back on track as they look to make a run to the College Football Playoff with a 24-10 triumph over the Yellow Jackets.

Bryant, who injured his ankle against Wake Forest on Oct. 7, only to reinjure it and eventually leave the Tigers’ ensuing 27-24 loss at Syracuse on Oct. 13 after suffering a concussion, looked strong Saturday following his team’s bye week. He finished 22-
