CLEMSON — Like most married couples, Laura Garren and Chuck Linnell like to rib each other and share the inside jokes that come with any long relationship.
That relationship was radically redefined in a matter of seconds in 2008, when Chuck suffered a catastrophic stroke at the age of 56.
Garren recently published “Stroke Happens: A Caretaker’s Memoir,” a book chronicling just how their lives changed in the aftermath, as Linnell began the recovery process and Garren navigated their new reality.
Garren discussed the book during a signing the couple held at Nick’s recently. The Clemson tavern is a

Front-row seats to magic
It’s not the floats I remember, although there were quite a few. Looking back, they were simple and predictable, but we wrung every ounce of enjoyment from them.
First came the car with officials to open the parade. We recognized them all, because it was not a very large town. Convertibles, tops down, with beautiful girls seated atop them dressed in jewel-colored evening gowns and tiaras rolled down Main Street. Miss Merry Christmas, the Cotton Queen, Miss Scotland County. They all waved with hands encased in long white

The true reason for the season
Dear Editor,
When I was a child, Christmas was the biggest day of the year for me.
It meant a lot of gifts and seeing beautiful decorations put up. We always cut a live tree off of our property to decorate. Seemed like there was a joyous spirit in the air. People would act better toward each

Let us exalt His name together
I’ve always enjoyed Thanksgiving with my family but many times I become distracted from the intended purpose. I also confess that sadly between football, conversations and pumpkin pie there is not always a lot mentioned about being thankful. Unfortunately, many have forgotten or maybe they have never known the history of human suffering that is associated with the Pilgrims. It’s been recorded that the new colony were focused on giving God thanks for His blessings and protection as

Walking in winter
Walking is one of the best exercises seniors can do. It helps with depression, blood pressure, mental acuity, muscle strength, bone mass, joint support, balance and more. For some of us, however, walking outdoors can be a problem now that cold weather has arrived. Along with freezing temperatures, snow and ice on sidewalks can be treacherous.
There are ways around that, however. You only need to think of indoor

Vietnam parasite is killing vets
A year ago, bile duct cancer seen in Vietnam veterans was a hot topic in the news, briefly. Now it’s fallen out of the headlines — but it hasn’t stopped affecting veterans, and a U.S. senator is calling for a federal study.
Bile duct cancer in veterans who served in Vietnam (or Korea, Thailand or Laos) no doubt comes from eating fish contaminated with a water-borne parasitic worm called a fluke, from

Now at new location
Quick Copy Print Center and Bowers School Supply of Easley have recently moved into a newly remodeled and larger facility. Serving the area 29 and 43 years, respectively, the move reflects the expanded value that customers have placed on the two companies over the years. By purchasing the former Roper Motor Company and Winfields location at 102 N. 1st St. next to Uncle Sam’s Antiques, the businesses have doubled their production and retail spaces. Preserving some of the items left behind by former occupants and the early 1900s style of the building was a priority of owners Don and Diane Williams, who took more than a year to accomplish the project from start to finish. The new location was updated to allow the addition of new production equipment for the copy center and inventory space for items serving the area’s schools, parents, churches, medical offices and child care facilities. The new facility is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and on Saturday from noon-4 p.m. Quick Copy/Print Center can be reached at (864) 859-0048, and Bowers School Supply can be reached at (864) 855-3222.

Here comes Santa Claus
COUNTY — Central, Six Mile and Liberty kicked off the Pickens County Christmas parade season last weekend, as they enjoyed beautiful weather for their annual celebrations.
Huge crowds showed up to ring in the season, spready holiday cheer and even collect a little candy.
After originally being scheduled for Tuesday night, the threat of rain forced Clemson to reschedule its parade for this Thursday, and Dacusville, Pickens and Easley will also join in the fun this weekend. Children in Norris will also get a visit from Santa
