Big changes coming for schools
2 elementary schools getting magnet themes
COUNTY — Two Pickens County elementary schools will transform into theme-based magnet schools next year after action taken earlier this month by school board members.
McKissick Elementary School in Easley is slated to become the 
McKissick Academy of Science and Technology, and Central Elementary will become the Central Academy of the Arts beginning in the 2018-19 school year, according to district spokesman John Eby. The changes are coming as part of the district’s Breakthrough in School Choice initiative.

Bryant, meanwhile, is looking to cement his spot in Clemson lore after watching All-American Deshaun Watson lead the Tigers to last year’s crown. The game is set for an 8:45 p.m. kickoff Monday and will be televised on ESPN. The winner will face the victor of Monday’s Rose Bowl matchup between No. 2 Oklahoma and No. 3 Georgia. Humane Society to remain open
Organization has funding through first half of year

LIBERTY — Thanks to generous donors, the Pickens County Humane Society will not be shutting its doors at the end of the 
year, as its officials once feared.
A fundraising campaign to save the shelter, which lost its county funding this year, has exceeded its $70,000 goal.

Praters Creek set to honor
PICKENS — A local church will host a celebration for its pastor, who is set to retire this weekend after 65 years of ministry.
Ray Allen will lead his final service at Praters Creek Baptist Church at 11 a.m. on Sunday, and the church will host a celebration in his honor at 4 p.m.
Allen has pastored several churches throughout the Upstate over his more than six decades in the ministry.
Clemson awards 1,400 degrees

CLEMSON — Clemson University awarded more than 1,400 
degrees Thursday during two ceremonies in Littlejohn Coliseum. The degrees included 1,097 bachelor’s and 279 master’s. Sixty-two Ph.D.s also graduated and were honored in a hooding ceremony Wednesday evening.

Mildred Rholetter Moore
SENECA — Mildred Rholetter Moore, 92 of 303 N. Oak St., 
Seneca, went to be with her Lord and Savior Wednesday Dec. 20, 2017, at the Cottingham Hospice House.
She was born Feb. 21, 1925, to Henry and Pearl Denny Rholetter in Westminster. She was married to the late Harold “J.C.” Julius Clay Moore. She was a retired telephone operator for Clemson University. She was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her spouse, brothers, Burt
