Liberty Scout improves Hagood Mill
PICKENS — Thanks to an enterprising young man and his group of volunteers, visitors to Hagood Mill will have a smooth path to the past.
Tyler Benjamin of Liberty is a member of Boy Scout Troop 51 of Pickens, which is led by Scoutmaster Perry Gravely.
For his Eagle Scout project, Benjamin decided to replace the stairway that leads up to the moonshine still at the mill.
“Me and Perry came up with the idea,” he said, “to try and make it as safe as possible to

EASLEY — Easley’s newest coffee spot promises a hassle-free experience.
“We promote ourselves as a laid-back coffee/tea house,” Pandora Coffee’s Cheryl Bork said. “When you go to a coffee shop and you’re afraid to order because you don’t know the difference between a frappe and a latte, a cappuccino, whatever — this is the place for you.”
Cheryl and her husband, Scott, opened Pandora on Black Friday in November, in the same building that houses her ILY Soaps business at 319 Gentry Memorial Highway.
“This is my husband’s dream,” Bork said. “We bought the building and created the space back here. We just want it to be like the old-fashioned coffee and tea houses. Just come in and relax.”
“Don’t feel like you have to leave,” she continued. “We’ll engage in

PICKENS — Pickens Middle School assistant principal James King has been named as the next principal of the school beginning in the 2018-2019 school year.
“James has spent his whole career in the School District of Pickens County, and it’s been a pleasure to watch him grow as an educator and as a leader,” SDPC superintendent Danny Merck said. “He’s familiar with Pickens Middle School and with the school community, and I can’t wait to see how the school is going to flourish under his leadership.”
King is in his second stint as an assistant principal at Pickens Middle. He was an assistant principal there from 2013-2015 and played a key role in helping the school transition to its current building. From 2015-2017, he was an assistant

Before working at DES, Chapman was the principal at Centerville Elementary School in Anderson School District 5 from 2014-2017. From 2011-2014, he was the

Appearances can be deceiving
It was the afternoon of Christmas Eve. We had three dozen blue point oysters and were gathered around the fire pit preparing to roast them.
They’d started the fire a few hours before and had a nice bed of coals raked to the side. The rack was positioned above the coals, and Michael had mixed up his special recipe of melted butter and secret ingredients in preparation for the feast.
As we could only find one of our oyster shucking knives, we had

Seventh seat
not the solution
Dear Editor,
Reading about some of the proposals and decisions of our local government, often the public doesn’t not hear the rest of the story. Case in point, state representatives Davey Hiott, Neal Collins, Rex Rice and Gary Clary sponsored, voted for, and pushed through legislation to add a seventh seat to the county school board.
Easley already has the most influence on the board and with the

Meaningful New Year’s resolution
A brand-new year is here, and I am excited to see what the Lord has for us!
Keeping Christ at the center of our thoughts takes a great deal of discipline and determination, but so does everything else we really care about. It comes down to how serious we are about knowing God and how willing we are to
