Now is the time for superheroes

We watched “60 Minutes” this week and found out the crown prince of Saudi Arabia is working on changing the place of women in his country. It is no longer against the law for women to drive, and he wants them to receive equal pay for equal work.

That’s good news, and maybe one day America will be on the list of nations that gives women pay equality.

For now, among the countries on that list are Belgium, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Norway, Germany, Mexico, France, Slovenia, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Australia and Ireland. Some argue this will come when the time is right. I believe estimates are

Report debacle at the VA

It was difficult to pinpoint precisely how the conditions described in this report could have persisted at the Medical Center for so many years.”

Thus begins the conclusion to the full report issued by the Department of Veterans Affairs’ investigative office, the follow-up to a scathing interim report issued one year ago about deficiencies at the Washington, D.C. VA Medical Center.

The interim report — issued quickly because of the dire

There are no ‘gray areas’

Dear Editor,

Where have the heroes gone? Seems like yesterday I was a child and looking up to men called heroes. The hero was always young, good-looking, honest, brave, strong and wise. He would never curse and always kept a cool head unless a last resort — laughing in the face of danger, no fear of death whatsoever.

Then the 1960s came along, and there was a character who

LIBERTY — Pickens County officials broke ground on new hangars at the Pickens County Airport last week.

Before the March 13 groundbreaking, county council members held a special called meeting at the airport on a resolution to dedicate the hangars in memory of Dakota Jacks, a Pickens High School student who was killed in a plane crash in Arizona on June 24, 2014.

“Dakota Jacks was a beloved Pickens County resident and honor student at a Pickens High School, JROTC cadet, Beta Club member, a vital member of the school’s bluegrass music group, as well as a full and joyful participant in the life and activity of our community, providing outstanding service thereto,” the resolution read by Pickens

Coming soon, new potatoes

By Olivia Fowler
For the Courier

ofowler@thepccourier.com

It’s March, and new potatoes are soon going to be plentiful. It’s up to us to take advantage of them.

New potatoes are special. They have thin, delicate skins. When they’re first dug from the earth, the skins can come off when they’re washed.

For most of these recipes, we recommend using small new potatoes. Their unique flavor is slightly different from that of larger, older potatoes, and you only have the opportunity to experience that in spring.

If you have a good source for local produce, buy from there. If not, look around in your grocery store. Ideally, you can grow your own, but unless they’re already growing in your garden, it’s a little late to be thinking of that.

So hurry and get your potatoes. There’s nothing like them.
