Sharkey picked to lead Daniel High

CENTRAL — Shannon Sharkey, currently in her second year as an assistant principal at Pickens High School, has been named the new principal of Daniel High School starting in the 2018-19 academic year.
Sharkey will succeed current principal Josh Young, who is being promoted to School District of Pickens County executive director of student services.

Liberty senior named SC wrestler of the year
LIBERTY — The Liberty High School wrestling program was well represented last week during the Senior All Star Wrestling Classic in Myrtle Beach.
Following the event, Red Devil senior Cole Murphy was named South Carolina wrestler of the year on Saturday.
Liberty senior standouts Murphy, Jacob Rogers and Lucas Bates all had wins that helped the North team win the event.
Thompson to speak at next COTU meeting in Six Mile
SIX MILE — Margaret Thompson will speak to the public at the next Conservatives of the Upstate meeting at 6:30 p.m. March 15 at the Six Mile Community Building, located at 106 S. Main St. in Six Mile.
Thompson is running for Pickens County Council District 1. She has a criminal justice degree from Tri-County Technical College and worked for the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office for 27 years, as well as serving on the Clemson City Council from 2004-2008.
She recently closed down one of her businesses, Upstate Process Service, after 20 years. She

Auction to benefit Dacusville Community Center
DACUSVILLE — The Dacusville Community Center will present “The third annual Best-Ever Chinese Auction” on Saturday, March 17.
The Dacusville Community Center is located at 2671 Earls Bridge Road in Easley. Doors will open at 11 am for viewing.
Ticket drawing will begin at 1 pm. There will be a hot dog sale and a bake sale. All proceeds will go to support the Dacusville Community Center.
Grace United plans Holy Week schedule
PICKENS — Grace United Methodist Church of Pickens is inviting local residents to join in a journey to the resurrection during Holy Week, March 25-April 1.
The week will begin with a Palm Sunday Cantata, ‘Hope in the Shadows,’ at 10:30 a.m. March 25. A Maundy Thursday Communion Service is planned at 6 p.m. March 29, followed by a Good Friday ‘Stations of the Cross’ Service at 7 p.m. March

Liberty Rec 17U team to play for state title Friday
LIBERTY – The Liberty Recreation all-star 17 and under basketball team won the Western district championship on Saturday night.
The team, coached by Jacob Sexton, will play in the state tournament on Friday in Westminster against the winners of the other districts around the state.

Days of crabs and ice cream
We were visiting my Aunt Liv (Olivia) in Washington, N.C., on the Pamlico River. It was summer, and we’d all been swimming.
Sammy and Shep had been out on the river in the boat to check the crab pots and had hauled in a bumper crop. They were all good sized Atlantic blue crabs and they were destined for the picnic table after some folks got busy setting everything up.

I read the article in the Feb. 7 edition about the city of Pickens proposing increasing city business license fees by 10 percent.
I recently looked at the city of Pickens’ financial audits of the past few years. One of the main challenges the city government has is its costs are rising, but natural revenue growth is non-existent or very low.
