Rec football, cheer signups now open
PICKENS — The Pickens Recreation Department and Pickens Youth Athletic Corporation are currently registering youth for the fall 2018 cheerleading and football season.
Deadline for registration is June 6. Parents can register their children at the Pickens Recreation Center on Sangamo Road in Pickens or online at cityofpickens.com.
The following age divisions are offered: 6 years old/100 pounds; 7-8

Our Diamond Day celebration was a great success! The weather started a little shaky for us in the morning, but the entire day’s festivities played out as planned. We want to thank all of our friends, relatives and visiting teams from Pendleton, Easley and Powdersville who came to enjoy the day with us and supported this event.

Six Mile unveils Cherokee Path historic marker

SIX MILE — Six Mile officials, community members, historical experts and Cherokee tribal leaders gathered at Town Hall on Tuesday morning to celebrate the town’s Native American heritage by witnessing the formal unveiling of markers commemorating the Cherokee Trading Path.
Two identical markers were placed, one in the triangle across from the service station on North Main Street and the other in front of Town Hall.

Pickens man charged with murder
Bennett accused of shooting neighbor
PICKENS — A Pickens man is behind bars after police say he shot and killed his neighbor on Saturday.
Paul Scott Bennett, 58, of 110 Sunny Lane, was arrested Sunday and charged with murder in connection with the death of 39-year-old Robin Jeanette Smith, according to Pickens County Sheriff’s Office chief deputy Creed Hashe.

Easley man dies in wreck

PICKENS — A 32-year-old Easley man died Friday after his motorcycle hit a tree in Pickens.
Christopher Shane Heaton, of Farrs Bridge Road, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, according to Pickens County deputy coroner Gary Duncan.
The accident occurred at 7:35 p.m. in the 600 block of East Cedar Rock Street.

Teen hit, killed by SUV in Easley

EASLEY — A Greenville teenager died Saturday after being hit by a vehicle on U.S. Highway 123 in Easley.
Sarah Allysa Stamey, 16, of Watson Drive, died at Greenville Memorial Hospital on Saturday night following the accident, Pickens County deputy coroner Gary Duncan said.
The accident occurred around 8:30 p.m. near the Bojangles’ at 6505 Calhoun Memorial Highway, Duncan said.
Stamey was attempting to cross the highway when she was struck.
