Liberty pharmacy honors local war hero with special display

LIBERTY — With Memorial Day coming up next week, Walter Toole and his business, Liberty Family Pharmacy, are helping to keep alive the memory of a Pickens County soldier who made the ultimate 
sacrifice for his country.
James Donnie Howe was born in Pickens County in December 1948. He was killed on May 6, 1970, while serving as a lance corporal in the U.S. Marines in Vietnam.
President Richard Nixon posthumously presented Howe with the Medal of Honor. The citation recognizes his “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty.”

Man charged with stealing bread truck
SIX MILE — Police say a Six Mile man stole a bread truck and gave away some of its contents on Thursday.
Kyle Daniel Moon, 27, was arrested Thursday night and charged with grand larceny. He was still being held at the Pickens County Detention Center on a $15,000 surety bond at press time Tuesday.
Deputies responded Thursday morning to a report of a truck being stolen from the parking lot of the Dollar General store located at 2308 Liberty Highway in Six Mile, according to a Pickens County Sheriff’s Office news release.
Witnesses said a man had walked up to the store and was seen driving away in the vehicle at a high rate of speed, the release said.
The stolen 2013 Isuzu box truck was valued at approximately $45,000,

High School Graduations are Saturday
COUNTY — Pickens County high school seniors will walk across a stage and into their futures on Saturday morning.
Hundreds of students will receive their diplomas as Daniel, Easley, Liberty and Pickens high schools hold graduation ceremonies at their football stadiums on Saturday morning.
Graduations are planned at 8:30 a.m. at each of the four schools.
With thunderstorms possible, activities may be moved into the school gymnasium with overflow seating in the auditorium. School-specific information such as parking arrangements and tickets has been communicated by each school, and is posted on the school and district websites.
County council chair calls for end to sister city talk

PICKENS — Pickens County Council chairman Roy Costner asked staff last week to remove funding to join Sister City International from the county’s proposed fiscal year 2018-19 budget.
Costner made the request during a budget work session on May 14.
“I want us to stop talking about it,” Costner said.
The approximately $900 allocated to the membership is “a drop in the bucket” compared to the overall proposed budget, he said.

Gov. hopeful names Wilkins running mate
GREENVILLE — Republican gubernatorial candidate Catherine Templeton announced 13th Circuit solicitor Walt Wilkins as her running mate on Tuesday.
In the first election where South Carolinians will vote for governor and lieutenant governor as a ticket, Templeton said Wilkins brings valuable experience as a prosecutor where the state needs it most.
“Two of our state’s top problems are corruption and crime,” said Templeton. “Walt’s wheelhouse is all of the very important things that keep us safe in South Carolina, and we’re going to work in partnership on those things.”

Park opens at animal shelter

PICKENS — Those interested in adopting a pet from the Pickens 
County Animal Shelter now have a place to take a dog out for a test run or jump or belly rub.
The Leadership Pickens County Class of 2018 held a ribbon cutting of the Leadership Legacy Park at the shelter Monday morning.
At the start of the ceremony, LPC Class of 2018 chair Sharon Johnson asked her classmates to take a big sigh of relief.

Celebrate Liberty Spring Festival is this Saturday
LIBERTY — The Liberty festivals and events committee and the city of Liberty will present the Celebrate Liberty Spring Festival this Saturday, May 26, from noon-7 p.m. in downtown Liberty.
The festival will focus on the Medal of Honor recipients from Pickens County and all of those who have served the country and county and who gave “their all.”

The Six Mile Issqueena Festival went on last Saturday in 
downtown Six Mile despite a threat of rain all day. Thankfully the heavy downpours held off until later in the afternoon, allowing those who braved the elements the chance to enjoy what the town had to offer. Picture are some of the sights that were enjoyed.
